Getting meds w/o any blood test.

Hi all,

Well I have an appointment to see my doc tomorrow about a tick bite/rash I got about 2 weeks ago on vacation.

From what I understand from researching, it's highly unlikely I would test positive so early for Lyme.

I had a bite, a rash and am having many Lyme symptoms. Do you think it's possible I can talk her into a couple of weeks of Doxycycline just to be safe rather than sorry? I REALLY want to take any measures I can and I am so afraid no one will treat me without a positive test.

Well, it depends on a lot of things. If you live in an area known to be endemic for Lyme disease, your doctor MAY agree to treat you. Technically, every doctor should (if Lyme disease is in your area), but they don't. If Lyme disease isn't in your area (according to the CDC), you will probably have more trouble.

Unfortunately, many Dr.'s believe Lyme only exists in very specific places, and won't even consider it if you aren't from there.

So, I don't know what will happen, but it is definitely worth asking. After all, the worst they can say is No, and if they say yes, you get antibiotics.

If your doctor doesn't treat you, find another doctor. If you're symptomatic you should be given antibiotics--period.

It's nothing to fool around with. Many doctors have the "wait and see" approach. And unfortunately with this disease, time is of the essence.

The tests for Lyme are 30% accurate and most doctors do not know this (or do not care). So this means a negative test does not rule it out (even though many patients will walk away feeling reassured with the negative results and belief in their ignorant doctors).

It's such a faulty test that it shouldn't even be used and yet they're diagnosing us or ruling it out using it.

I really agree with the others on this. Have you ever considered the homeo or natural tx's?

IMHO - I would suggest 6 weeks on a large dosage of doxy, since you didn't say anything about any sx's before 2 weeks ago,

so you might not be in the 'chronic' state as of yet - but understand not only that I have NO medical training

& I am guessing at this, like so many others have to - it is critical to stop this infection in it's tracks!
