This is both on and off topic: I heard the same thing as Neffer about autism this morning. According to one parent who has 2 kids w/ autism, part of the increase is due to a much wider range of diagnoses, ie; He said that an autism diagnosis now includes kids who are suffering more of an ADD illness.
I also agree w/ the vaccination information. I believe they are packing in way to much stuff into those shots.
But mostly, I believe MUCH of the increase in autism/ADD can be blamed on the way we now live. Between school, all the MANY sports & activities parents want their kids to do, the constant BARRAGE of information (phones, IPODS, texting, facebooking, twittering, etc etc etc), and finally: the conditions in our schools.
Maybe most of you do not know how it used to be. We were expected to work every minute we were in class. However, we got two 15 min recesses, which were not organized and were quietly supervised by a teacher (who was only out there to bust up fights, etc) Of course, there were limits, but we did not have to constantly BEHAVE.
We got at least an hour for lunch -- mine was more like 1 1/2 hrs. Kids who lived close, like me, had plenty of time to walk home, eat lunch, and return to the playgrounds and ball fields for more socializing and play. We ran, played a lot of tetherball and tag, climbed, flipped, jumproped, etc.
The teacher did not sit w/ us at lunch, in the cafeteria. We were permitted to talk and yell freely, but the teachers took turns setting limits on any wild or destructive behavior.
4th thru 6th, and this was the Iowa school system which was ranked very highly (at least back then), after lunch, we got yet another break. The teacher read to us, and those who were tired, laid their heads down on their desks w/o fear of punishment.
When it was time to get crackin, then we wasted no time.
Our kids don't have this benefit anymore. It is like every single second must be packed to the max. What do they get these days for lunch? Like 20 minutes? When my own kids were in school, if they ate in the cafeteria, they were in line til almost time to go back to class.
There is no freedom in school anymore. Or time to be a kid. Kids don't have time to look at the clouds, build snowmen and igloos, or jumprope or hopscotch after school.
It is my opinion that kids these days are seriously over-stimulated, and that is much of the real root. I seriously believe that there's a lot of stuff we need to consider changing.
Awhile back, I did hear a news story that there was a school where they experimented giving the kids 5 min recesses every hour, and that the ADD kids improved a lot.
If there are ADD parents, or sufferers (not caused by Lyme), I am very interested in your feedback. I feel like we are all wound way too tight!
Back to Deejavu's post: I'm not touching that vaccine w/ a 10 ft pole. I will have to rely on my crappy immune system, echinawhatever, and C.
And yep -- I remember when polio vaccs were not vaccs, but medicine on a sugarcube that we took orally. And even after they put it in shots, it was still a live vaccine when my kids were growing up ('75-'80 appx)
