Hi Willowrose!!
I have stayed away from simple carbs (as long as you don't count the times I just couldn't help myself!!) since I was a teen. And the whole 'get a buzz from protein' thingy - it took me about 8 -9 months to finally figure out what was causing it, because of course, protein being the culprit was a little hard to believe - even for me!!!
I am not on any abx, but when I was I didn't use that much yogurt, but instead I used Kefir. It has 10 different strains of the 'good' bacteria & it's consistency is about that of drinkable yogurt. I was on high doses of Mino at the time & was doing everything I could think of to protect my entire digestive system from the effects. I go on 2 month rounds of Doxy from time to time (when my doc & I believe that I may have been re-infected) and I always eat a little something before taking any abx (unless it says specifically not to) & get the Kefir going again!!! I'm about to the point where I feel that I can keep up with growing my own Kefir grains & I will be starting that fairly soon. Otherwise it's too expensive in the rural area I live in.
***Should anyone want a link to follow to a Kefir making site, please let me know****
Psyllium seed husks don't help me out at all. I have to use either Citrucel (actuve ingredient being Methylcellulose) or Benefiber (active ingredient being Wheat dextrin -although it's considered to be gluten-free). I also be sure to take my magnesium oxide. I have "significant" issues with IBS w/chronic "C".
As far as sugars go - I can only take in very, very small amounts of sugar, as that will set off all kinds of nasty sx (including some very serious cramping for days at a time) with my IBS. So although I understand all about artificial sweeteners, from time to time I do have to rely on them. Insisting on living in such a rural area, health food stores are not so abundant here - but whenever I can get to one, I make sure to get a bottle of powered Stevia for my sweetener.
I too am rarely 'truly' hungry. I think I posted about this somewhere else on here, and I said there that what I get most often, rather than a hungry feeling like most people get, I start to feel a bit of burning & then nausea when I need to eat. Hubby had to help me figure that one out!!!
Sharing our experiences can be the only way we can learn to avoid certain pitfalls - before being stuck in one!!!!
