400mg Doxycycline in one go or divided in 2 doses a day????

Hi,
My GP has prescribed me 400mg of doxycycline a day taken in 2 times, so 2 times 200mg every 12 hours for a month to fight the lyme in me. But I have read somewhere, and cant find it now, that it is best to kill lyme if I have it in one go to spike the blood levels. Does anyone know about this? What shall I do?

Humm, just to share. My doc gave me 100mg 2x a day. she said it was a pediatric prescription because she was worried
about (I guess) liver reaction. (I have Hep c) . But she did tell me that I will have to eventually do IV for possibly 2 yrs.
So I doubt that helps but just to let you know all the doctors have reason for what they do. Maybe your doctor didn't want you to get too sick. Other's here have way more experience on this than me.

Thanks Bucci. I am not sure she had much clue, I brought with me the guides for her to have a run through. Lets see what the others reply. Are you feeling better now?

I just went in to see how much doxy I was taking; no wonder I didn't have any herx with it. i was only taking 100mg twice daily. Probably the LLMD would have upped the dose in time had I not tested positive for so many coinfections which compelled a switch from doxy to other meds. Do you know if your doctor plans to give you a higher dose once it is established that you are doing well with it?

Dosage

Increasingly, clinicians recommend that certain drugs used for Lyme disease be given at higher daily doses: for example, 3,000–6,000 mg of amoxicillin, 300–400 mg doxycycline, and 500–600 mg of azithromycin. Some clinicians prescribe antibiotics using blood levels to guide higher doses. Close monitoring of complete blood counts and chemistries are also required with this approach.

Bucci, the reason you are on a lower dose is probably because of you elevated liver enzymes. My LLMD did the same thing with me.

This doctor I went is a GP, I just gave her the guidelines and she prescribed 400 mg because the 200 mg I took for 3 weeks before did not do anything. I was sick again last week . I am booking an appointment on the 4th with a LLMD that I was recommended, there is only 3 in the UK so it was hard to find one. Then we will see what he says, at least I am on the right path. No one did any blood test on me, but I guess the LLMD might do.

My LLDr. went to a LD conference a month or two ago and was informed (? - don't know if that's the right word to use) that Doxy will send LD bacteria into the cyst form.

If I were you, I would dose 200 mg every 12 hours.

My LLMD (here in FL) started me two months ago on doxy 100mg 2 x per day. When I first started, I had just stopped a ten day augmentin run and felt horrible for the first two weeks or so into the doxy (so I know something was going on) - hence we are all different and what may or may not work for one, may or may not for another.

I have heard that it is once one stops the doxy, the cysts form and another antibiotic is used at that time to address/attack it.

is the doxyc the one with suplher. are some people reacting off of that?
I am sick and its only my second day of 50mg twice a day.
and the symptome are typical liver style flare up that i am familiar with even before and i wasn't
on antibiotics. I can see already that this is the nightmare part of the treatment.
I'm just wondering if someone is alergic t sulpher what do they give them?
not that i even know if i was alergic. also I have a slight fever and glands swelling.

humm, I guess my new mantra will have to be "don't die wondering". I'm a wreck already because
I can see this treatment scene is as unpredictable as the virus.

I think the sulphur compound is part of the doxy medication, at least it is in mine - so not sure of how you can get around it other than a different medication. I think it is so hard to tell if you are herxing or truly having a reaction to the doxy. If your throat is swelling and you are having issues breathing, you should definitely stop using it immediately.

Remember to do your detoxing, brushing, epsom baths, water, etc, - it does help and it does get better. Part of the initial herxing I experienced made me depressed as well, I just tell myself it is the medication and will pass, and it does. Step away from the computer too, I had to, to stay sane and refocus on something else

It's great to see your going to see a LLMD, I'm sure he will put you on the proper dosage of ABX. He/she will likely want to do further blood tests on you also. Please keep us informed ok!!

I have read that you need 400mg and that all at once gets you to theraputic levels to kill the bug.

I know every doctor does it differently.

I would try it both ways ..... sometimes a little trial and error will help you and the doctor with the right direction.

OneWearychick is right about stopping if you feel like your throat is swelling. Definitely let your doctor know. I'm just curious....have you been tested for Bartonella? I get fevers and swollen glands when I treat and it's from Bart.
