how to tell you are herx'ing?

I am on doxy, and how do i tell if i am herxing? majority of my deblitating pain went away, i am able to walk, not sure if i can negotiate steps yet, but other than the pain going away, and twicthing that lasts 10-15 seconds all over my arms, legs, back, and occassional skin itching, some sleep sweats and disorder, i am not noticing anything. and yes, lots of pins poking me everywhere, sometimes even in scalp and neck.

is this med working? or i need to switch the antibiotics. the rhuematologist tells me this is the prescribed treatment nothing else is needed. ***?! he is like if the bacteria doesn't die, then we can do some synovial articulation and send for some pcr testing or give me an injection. what is he talking about?

i thought lyme patients should never take cortio steriod injections.

today i did lunch on wheat tho as i was feeling weak due to lack of food/carbs.

A herx reaction differs from one individual to the next. Usually you will notice an increase in symptoms. Please do not take steroid injections, this will only make the infection worse. Your rhuemy is following IDSA guidelines, and seems to knows little about treating Lyme disease. How long have you been on doxy? If you have just started treatment you need to be patient, and give it time to work. Have you seem a LLMD yet?

It looks like you are doing good on Doxy. Be patient, you just started.

A herx is when all of your symptoms that you currently have get a lot worse. Most people can tell when they are herxing because all of their symptoms are exacerbated.

What dosage of Doxy are you on and for how long?

i am doxy 200mg (100x2) a day. the doc won't give me higher, i asked but he said this is the right one to be on.
LLMD is the guy who i need to meet but his appt has still some time to go. not feeling too great today with the knee. :(

Yes, the dosage should be higher. When do you see the LLMD?

I have had probably 10 steroid injections in my neck and knees and even took steroids for a month orally, nothing but relief happened to me, so I am kind of pro-steroids if you need them. It also sounds like he wants to get a fluid sample from your knee and send it out to be tested for the DNS of lyme bacteria. I would totally go for it.
If they dont find it in your knee it doesnt mean you dont have lyme.

also meant to say that I think people do not herx as often as they think. Just because you may feel ba does not mean it is a herx. a herx only happens when the bacteria die off, usually when you start a new med, or at the max once a month when the bacteria replicaxtes usually around a month or so.

but I had my first hard herx days 3-10 of doxy at 300mg a day, I wanted to jump off my roof it was so bad. I think I have had 3 herxes the whole 2.5 years I have been sick.

Hi, Reading your question about the doxycycline brings back memories for when I was on antibiotics for two years. I had many herxzimer reactions and lots of nerve symptoms. Make a long story short the antibiotic treatment was two years late and did not cure me. But there is hope!  Do not take steriods! I have been cured as of 2006 by alternative means. I took a naturopathic remedy called lyme nosode for three years under the supervision of a naturopath in Conn. and maintained an 85% rawfood diet. Also I had my mercury fillings removed. The whole key is to alkalize your body with raw fruits and vegetables so the lyme bacteria can not survive and you can rebuild your immune system. Seek the supervision of a doctor who is alternative and lyme literate.

I think you should stick with this dose and trust your doctor until he gives you a reason not to. I am on the same with my llmd - just because someone else does or does not do well on  a treatment you are trying, does not mean you will. Give it a try, a chance and a fair amount of time. Make sure you are using some detox methods to help you through the herxing (generally good to do anyway)

When do you follow up with your dr?
