I just saw this today. Seems way off base, especially the costs per year of antibiotics. No wonder we aren't getting the help we need. Lyme is not a money maker to the industry:

That article really ticked (pun intended) me off.

From the article:

"The currently used antibiotics are effective against the disease. Antibiotics are normally used in the early stages of Lyme disease and the drugs effectively treat the disease with minimum side effects. Antibiotics are prescribed to be taken orally or intravenously in patients with late stage persistent Lyme disease to treat symptoms such as early arthritis, skin rashes, joint problems, late nervous system problems, or heart problems. The majority of the early-stage patients treated with antibiotics never test positive for Lyme disease again. This indicates that the market is well served by antibiotics."

What the author fails to mention it that this disease is rarely diagnosed in it's early stages because of all the ignorant MD's who don't have a clue and the supposedly infectious disease doctors who minimize lyme disease and under treat it, that is if they even recognize in the first place.

Who's is this ignorant idiot that wrote this? Sheeesh!

My guess is that it was written by a Big Pharma research consulting group that was paid to look at trends on which to risk research capital/investment dollars. Looks like Lyme failed. So sad.

It really, really ticked me off too. "They" seem to be clueless, as usual.

In 3 years of being ill (and we have "good" health and abx insurance) I have spent over 125,000 on Dr.'s, tests and abx!

Yes, that is what I thought. Their numbers were exceptionally LOW. We hear all of the time about people losing their careers, spouses, homes, cars, etc, all because of Lyme. We hear about the antibiotic costs being outrageous. For that study to come up with -- what was it? -- $90.00 annually as an average spent on Lyme medications is "out there." They must have considered only the "bite/treat" early stage Lyme folks, I guess. They need to see Under Our Skin, obviously. Hey, maybe there is a way to let this company know that? I'll check!

Yes you are correct, that is $ 125K out of pocket over the past 3 years..Well 3 years and 3 months.

I pray that I am finally at the end...this year so far has not been bad. I have managed to be under $ 600- out of pocket so far!

I was/am so very fortunate to have a husband that works, as well as I have been working for a company from my home for 7 years now. If I had not been working.....not sure where we would be.

I can clearly remember for the first year or so being so ill, I would grab the office phone and crawl into bed with it. I also made many mistakes at work back then.

I honestly do not know how people treat this disease without being able to work and have that income coming in. I cannot imagine having to pay for abx completely. At least the most I ever had to pay for any abx was $ 40-, and my LLMD was only 40% out of pocket.
