I have been treated for Bartonella infection, which affected my brain tissue, for approx 1 1/2 years now due to a very serious cat bite at work, leading to emergency surgery, PICC line, etc.....Doxy is the drug of choice.  Initially I was told that I may have to be on the antibiotic for about 3 years.  about 5 months ago the doctor said we may try to wean off this Spring.  Recently, during an emotional upheaval in my life, I forgot to take my meds for 2 1/2 days.  The symptoms started to return....droopy face, spinning head, garbled language skills, exhaustion, etc......I am wondering if anyone else has been treated for Bartonella and has similar responses.  Being on Doxy for the rest of my life isn't a big deal, but I don't understand why the symptoms return so soon after not taking the meds.  Not certain how long the docs will actually be willing to give me the Doxy with all the issues in medical care right now.....Any advice or input would be appreciated.

I just finished bartonella treatment the beginning of March. In the beginning/middle of January, I had a period where I didn't have my antibiotics. Within three days, a lot of my symptoms had come back. My doctor told me that until the bartonella was 100% gone, it would come back very quickly. It is now March, and I have been off my bartonella antibiotics (but not all antibiotics) for a week, and my bartonella symptoms do not seem to be coming back.

I can't tell you how much longer you will need to treat, but I can tell you that a quick return of symptoms doesn't necessarily mean that you aren't close to the end of treating bartonella. Apparently co-infections, especially bartonella, come back a lot sooner than Lyme.

thanks for your input......it's comforting (although I wouldn't wish this condition upon anyone!) to know that others have had similar experiences in their treatment....since the organism burrowed into my brain tissue I may have to stay on the antibiotics much longer....I appreciate you taking the time to respond.....smilewinkgrin

How about adding Rifampin? Or going to Zithromax plus Rifampin?

Rifampin was what worked really well for me.
