My mom was diagnosed with Lyme about
2 weeks ago but she didn't call me because she didn't want me to worry. I think she didn't call because she didn't want me to worry her. She wants to trust her doctor and after what she told me, I want to strangle her doctor.
Anyway, her doc prescribed 100 mg of doxy, once/day for two weeks. This "very powerful" dose of the antibiotic will cure her. The doc does not want to give her a refill because it is so "strong and dangerous."
I find this VERY amusing because my son's doc has him on 100mg/day of doxy for acne and he can stay on "this low dose" for years if necessary.
I was heavily involved in Lyme treatment and current events about
20 years ago when I was very sick. I haven't been paying attention much lately so I am not up to date with treatment options, especially when newly diagnosed.
Can someone tell me what docs are currently prescribing for new cases? How much doxy and for how long?
My mom lives in the middle of the woods in northern Connecticut so you'd think these docs would know how to treat Lyme....at least they made a clinical diagnosis and didn't wait for a test.
Thanks for your help!

The two weeks of Doxycycline is pretty much the norm for most doctors...

At just 100mg/day? I know when I first got diagnosed (20 yrs ago) my doc prescribed doxy 3X/day but I don't remember the strength.

I'm sorry to disagree here. Two weeks of doxy even at the right dose is not enough.
Burrascano's Advanced Topics in Lyme Disease;
"doxy can be very effective but only if adequate blood levels are achieved either by high oral doses (300 -600 mg daily) or by parenteral administration (I.V. therapy)."
Burrascano also suggests that 'early localized' infections should receive for oral therapy - must continue until symptom and sign free for at least one month - with a 6 week minimum.

I am on 400mg daily for 4 months + Weekly IV treatments of Rocephin.
