my husband coworker's dog died of lyme

Vet said the dog died of lyme, by the time he figured out what was wrong, Lyme was too far along and treatement no longer helped.

My cat, Cassidy, died of kidney failure, but her first symptoms were that she was refusing to eat/drink. I truly think (now) that she had Lyme disease, and died of it because we just didn't know what was wrong.

Here's what I found on this website:

Symptoms in cats (and dogs) are not as severe as the symptoms seen in humans that are infected with lyme. When a cat is infected by a lyme carrying tick, symptoms can include:

* Arthritis
* Lameness
* Joint Pain
* Joint Swelling
* Fever
* No appetite
* Dehydration
* Lethargy
* Swollen lymph nodes

If rare cases more severe symptoms will develop including:

* Kidney Disease/Failure

She did have the no appetite/dehydration/lethargy thing going on for a while before the kidney failure killed her. It makes me really sad just thinking about it.

My dog got Lyme on the same hiking trip that I did.  She was treated right away (funny how it took 3 years for ME to get treated) but I don't think it was long enough.  She ended up with really severe hip numbness and couldn't walk, seemed to be in lots of pain, and eventually could not control her bowels.  I had to put her down in August and it was super hard - especially thinking it was Lyme too.  I felt terrible that maybe if I had treated her with a longer course of abx she would have done better. 

 

My sister's dog was just diagnosed with lyme and given 10 days of treatment.  I guess I really worry about that, knowing how sick I am.

Hi,

I believe the vets check blood titers on dogs when they are testing for lyme. My little dog tested positive in July. Vet gave her 30 days of doxy even with low titers. See if your sister can get your vet to treat her dog longer.

From what I have been told, once your dog tests positive they always will. That is why testing lyme titers is important. If her vet will not treat her dog longer, then have him retest her titers in about 3 months.

This has been the summer from H for ticks. My dogs are picking them up constantly even though I treat them regularly. Of course I live in southeastern PA and we are hyperendemic. Deer, rabbits, squirrils, moles, mice - they all carry it. Not only lyme, but bartonella, etc.

It is getting bad.

I live in Chadds Ford, Kennett Square area near Longwood Gardens. Very hyperpandemic for lyme.

My little male terrier has contracted Lyme 3 different summers in the last 5 years. He presented with that tell-tale bull's eye rash.

One of the things that hubby & I discovered that really has made a difference is 'Ortho' brand bug granules sold under the name of "Bug B Gon Max"

We have used this product on our yard area for the last two years & this year we have very few ticks - on us, on our dogs or cat. Everyone else in this area have said that this year was a horrible year for ticks!!
