doxycycline is an anti-inflammatory drug

In a study at http://aac.asm.org/cgi/reprint/47/11/3630 doxycycline is proven to be an anti inflammatory drug as well as a bacteria killer.  Could it be that we might think it is helping us by killing germs when it is actually only relieving our inflammation? Does this realization take away the diagnostic aspect of doxy treatment?

If prednizone is harmful because reduction of inflammation allows bacteria to grow, does doxy not also allow this?

Does taking other anti-inflammatory ingredients like ibuprofen and aspirin also cause us to have unrestricted growth of bacteria.

I believe that most antbiotics are anti-inflammatory which of course raises the question as to whether they are in fact fighting off the bacteria or serving as a bandaid. IMO if we can eventually go off the antibiotics and remain well, then it is defeating the bacteria. I would HOPE and again totally relying on scientific exploration, that it has been proven to kill bacteria because if not, then most medicine is a farce. I'm not so sure I'm ready to lose all confidence in the medical field.

Antibiotics definitley kill bacteria.....if not, penicillin (and others) would never cure anyone of life threatening infections. If the right abx had been around during the plague....a lot of lives would have been saved.

As springsjean said-- many abx have anti-inflamatory properties. Like for example: Azithromax.

At the end of the above article it states that " Doxy offers the additional advantage of providing anti-microbial AND anti inflamatory effects." A good thing !

Prednisone and NSAIDS do not do that.

And I really don't believe they directly cause bacteria to flourish. Bacteria flourish all by themselves, that is, when they are not faced with a hostile agent....like ABX.

It's not the reduction of inflammation that make prednisone a bad thing for Lyme Disease patients - it's the suppression of the immune system that steroids like prednisone create that makes it so bad for us.

You have a very valid concern in my eyes. It's crucial that we recognize that we are not the medical experts, but it's just as crucial for us to always ask questions of the medical experts we see! Otherwise we would all be tagged with "Post Lyme Disease Syndrome" even though we still have these infections raging inside of us and pushed off to the side!

I also believe that we must understand as much as we can about our infections, so that we can understand what is happening to our bodies. That way we are better equipped to help and to explain to our medical experts what has happened since our last visit.

I did not mean to offend anyone or infer that I was an expert in anything about this condition. Wow, there are so many aspects to our cells, muscles, organs...that no one could possibly have all the definitive answers. I was just thinking that since the doxy appeared to be working so well in the first week I used it - my knees were beginning to feel normal again even- and it stopped working the second week - I felt that maybe my negative Lyme test was indeed correct, and I still did not even have a diagnosis yet - that the anti-inflamation factor was all that was happening for me at that time. I have continued to read and listen to the fine words of this forum and I have decided that the dose was too low and two weeks was inadequate and I will return to my GP with that question. My specialist appt is still the end of Oct. even after having called the office and appealed for a little better time. I have about 6 numbers to call for doctors in Toronto, Michigan and New york and so I feel better just knowing there would be somewhere to go to get help.

I really don't believe you offended anyone or that anyone took you to be saying you were an expert on the subject either!! Right now we have a group of people on this forum that loves to discuss things! So if you make a post, expect that most likely some sort of a discussion will follow!!

These discussions are actually very healthy and good for us! They allow us to work things out in our own brain, see what other LLMD's are having their patients do, and it allows us to be much more supportive of each other.

Has anyone ever ordered drugs over the internet? I know you need to be aware of the risks. I did not know you could do this until I started to research doxycycline. Perhaps this is one way to take the power out of the hands of the doctors - or accidently kill yourself - whichever comes first??!!!

Please be very careful with that!!! You don't know what all might be in that pill you just swallowed.

There are some natural protocols that can be done at home if you are not wanting to see an LLMD, not to mention you could go to see a Naturopathic Doc or a Master Herbologist, or a Doctor of Chinese Medicine.

I have ordered prescriptions offline but only with my doctors' prescription script. I am so afraid to take anything other than what she says. I may not believe doctors know everything but I have to believe she has be in her best interests or I would be finding another doctor. That being said, being informed is the way to go. I research EVERYTHING !

Trav--thanks for the link to the natural protocols--good to know what else is available.

Abby--I wouldn't suggest ordering antibiotics online.  Not safe in my opinion.
