Nausea with Doxy?

I was on Doxy for 2 weeks through my regular PCP back in July and had no nausea, but now I'm on Monodox (brand name, not generic) through my llmd and the daily nausea is horrible! Is this typical with this drug? Does your body adjust over time, or is this the way I'll likely feel for the duration of the time I take it? Just curious of your experiences with it.....

A couple of things are to be sure to eat something substantial before you take it, and to stay out of the sun! You will burn faster than you ever have in your life!

If eating something substantial doesn't help, then I would suggest getting some ginger tea, crystalized ginger or ginger capsules and using those. Ginger is quite safe to use - I take 5 grams a day of powdered ginger root to deal with my severe nausea.

See, I would be eating before taking it, but the bottle itself says to not eat within 2 hours before or 1 hour after taking it! But if I did, I'm sure it would help with the nausea...hmmmm......

I'll definitely look into the ginger- thanks for the recommendation!

Now wondering if the pharmacy made an error when they put those labels on the pill jar..... that would be scary, huh?

My husband is also on monodox and having a problem with nauseau and headaches. He was on doryx before with no problem. You are supposed to take on empty stomach so it gets absorbed fully but I told him to take with food rather than not be able to take at all.

Many of us who have taken Doxycycline must eat with it - me included!- in order to prevent stomach damage. If you were to call your LLMD and told them that you are having some pretty serious stomach pains with the Monodox, I would venture they would tell you to eat something.

Here's what WebMD has to say about Monodox:
This medication is best taken by mouth on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal, usually 1 or 2 times daily or as directed by your doctor. Take this medication with a full glass of water (8 ounces/240 milliliters) unless directed otherwise. If stomach upset occurs, taking it with food or milk may help. However, doxycycline may not work as well if you take it with food or milk (or anything high in calcium - more details below ), so ask your doctor or pharmacist if you may take it that way. Do not lie down for 10 minutes after taking this medication.

Thanks for the info Traveler! I think I'm going to start taking it with something small and see if it helps... the last thing I want to do is make the drug less effective, but nausea isn't really all that fun......!

Also I have found with my meds that it isn't good enough to just not lie down. After I take my meds, I sit down for twenty minutes -- on the couch leaning back a little more than I would sitting in a kitchen or office chair.

If I move around or sit completely upright, I end up with stomach ache and nausea all day.

Took me a little while to figure this one out!
