OT ~ Question for Razzle?

Hi Razzle,

I am trying to cut down costs on some of my supplements... I have been taking Metagenics Estrovera for Menopause (I have stopped having hot flashes months ago but I am having sleep disturbances and some other symptoms) and this product helps me.

Metagenics Estrovera contains:

Rhapontic Rhubarb (Rheum rhaponticum L.) Root Extract [containing 2.16 mg rhaponticin]

Other Ingredients: Microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, croscarmellose sodium, silica, enteric coating (deionized water, cellulose acetate phthalate, glycerol triacetate, ammonium hydroxide, hypromellose, maltodextrin, and polyethylene glycol)

I was wondering if I could just order Rhubarb Root Extract alone (iherb sells it)? I wonder if that would work? And does Siberian Rhubard Root really come from Siberia? Duh!

I don't know much about rhubarb as an herb...and I'm not sure if Siberian Rhubarb really comes from Siberia...sometimes herbs are named incorrectly or their names refer to something other than the obvious.

But a quick online search reveals it is apparently superior to other methods of dealing with hot flashes and related issues during peri- or post-menopause. Good to know about!

Anyway, the Metagenics stuff is enteric coated, whereas the stuff from iHerb may not be enteric coated. Enteric coating enables the tablet to survive the stomach acid and dissolve in the small intestine instead of in the stomach. I don't know what difference this would make for hormone treatment, unless the rhubarb extract is an irritant to the stomach...

So all I can do is suggest a short trial of the extract from iHerb and see what happens. If your stomach doesn't seem to handle it well, or if you don't get the relief that you were getting from the Metagenics rhubarb, then you will probably have to get the more expensive Metagenics version. Unfortunately, the Metagenics version has a lot of excipients (fillers, binders, etc.) that really aren't good for us...

Thanks Razzle and what you wrote does help! You are a very wise person..

I will try the extract from Iherb and see how I feel.. Darn, $30.00 for Metagenics, $27.00 for ProgX, $88.00 for Green Vibrance Economy Size (I refuse to substitute that, tried it but nothing comes close), Natural Calm, Vitamin C, etc. It all adds up!!
