OK, this is a new symptom for my daughter. . .   I do not ever remember hearing about this   Does anyone here ever have this problem??  She has had a sore throat for the past few days and every time she eats, she chokes on her food.  Is this from Lyme??  Or maybe related to her sore throat??  How in the world do you ever know what is due to Lyme and what is a symptom of something else??!!!!!  Soooooo frustrating!!!

Any thoughts???

i had throat issues- turns out i lost my gag reflex at one point this summer! when the doctor stuck a tongue depressor in my throat, it just kept on going. so it's easier to choke, bc you dont have the reflex there to stop. is that her problem? i also had swallowing problems. my throat didnt feel sore like strep throat, but it felt like it had a weird lump sensation in it- my bet was my vagus nerve was affected

I've been having the same thing for months! Sometimes it just goes away for weeks at a time, but otherwise, every time I eat, I choke multiple times, and it's pretty frustrating (not to mention scary). Sore throat on top of it lately - almost feels like my throat is dry even when I'm really hydrated.

I wish I could tell you what's causing it, but I hope you can take even a little comfort in knowing your daughter isn't alone in it. I've been having a lot of issues with my digestive system so I'll let you know if anything comes up in that department that might be causing it.

Hopefully it goes away randomly on its own for your daughter just as it does for me - until then honestly it sounds silly but I make a conscious effort to chew my food into smaller pieces - it definitely helps a little!

Hi Teeners--no it is definately not that she has lost her gag reflex! She is actually gagging too much!! Hopefully, that symptom is gone for you?!!

Hi Borderlyme--you are right, sometimes it IS a comfort, for whatever reason, that someone else has the same issue. Guess it makes us feel less alone, and also, that it is more likely to be Lyme related.

I think it is funny, this Lyme thing. Every new body symptom, we attribute to Lyme and we have a running joke that we just need to wait a few days and it will pass. But then, who knows what will pop up next?!! Not much fun living this way!

Lyme/coinfections are known to cause choking due to throat spasms/vegas nerve irritation.

I actually tend to randomly choke as well. Its so weird!! Usually when I'm eating or drinking, but sometimes just nothing triggers it. It really is crazy what this stupid disease does. I'm sick and tired of saying to my husband "this is a classic symptom" and him looking at me like "what isn't?"

Oh and I get sore throats all the time!! Step too. Very painful.

Ugh. . . Well, nice to know that Caity is not the only one with this oddball symptom!! Hopefully, this too shall pass. Seems like the symptoms come and go randomly. Full moon coming up--that's another thing to watch out for!! Isn't it just CRAZY?!!

Jessica, Dr. J is treating Caity very aggressively for viruses. Interesting. Yes, she is on Virogen. And lots of other things!! Oddly, her evergy level still seems up, but her pain has not decreased at all. The acupuncturist says also, that her body is responding nicely and he can see improvement in her body--so WHY are all these doctors telling us there is improvement, but she can't seem to FEEL it?!! Even my husband and I see that she appears better, but she just does not.

Wondering if there is some sort of chronic pain cycle that she is trapped in. . .. I wish I could take this on myself--it would be easier in some ways to be able to know what it feels like!!

I had this too but it eventually went away.
