I am new to this community. I haven't officially been diagnosed with Lyme. My doctor wants to begin treatment with doxy and test my blood for antibodies after 4 weeks. Is this a normal procedure? How many have been diagnosed this way?
Here is my little story: My doctor called me a few weeks ago and said that he was investigating some of his old cases that were unresolved or he was thinking about. He had been studying Lyme diseas and was beginning to see it as an epidemic in the area we live in. (Pacific Northwest). He wanted to re-examine me with his new knowledge. He had previously diagnosed me with Fibromyalgia, Anxiety, Depression, Postural Orthostatic Tacchyardia (sp?) Syndrome, Spontaneous Intercranial Hypotension (acutally neuro called that one).
Two years ago, around this time of year, I woke up one day with a headache like I had never experienced in my life. (granted, my stress load was more than most can take...) First it was diagnosed as migraine, but it was the kind of headache that if you were flat on your back it would go away. Any exertion or movement upward would bring on the worst pain. I took all the migraine meds to no avail. Eventually, after bugging and pushing and bothering, I was found to have orthostatic hypotension. My blood pressure and heart rate were totally out of whack. The cardiologist found nothing wrong with my heart. The neurologist decided it would be therapuetic and diagnostic to do a blood patch to see if my spine had sprung a leak. Of course I had MRIs and nothing showed up. He put me on steriods for a week and told me to drink lots of caffeine. It was the only time in my life that I could drink coffee all day and not be shakey. The blood patch helped the headache, but the other symptoms lingered. I have been on all different meds for symptoms since it was eventually just said that it was my anxiety that was causing the whole mess.
My doctor asked me to write down my symptoms (same family doctor that I had throughout the problems):
Extreme off and on body pain that moves, but usually is always in my neck
anxiety
depression
heart racing for no reason
exertion headaches
muscle twitching throughout body
shakey limbs
water imbalance...pee too much or cant pee, dehydration (one of the original guesses about the headache) and water retention.
digestive issues (IBS) but probiotics help this so much!
legs have jumpy reflexes
dizziness with head changing postition
loss of balance (when he had me close my eyes and pushed me I didn't catch myself...I thought it was kind of mean not to warn a girl...the second time when I knew he was going to push I caught myself guess had slow startle reflex and I can't do the drunk walk at all)
inablitly to find the words I need/ occasional brain fog
extreme fatigue...tired all the time except bedtime. lol
hot and cold regulation problem
PMS
here is a weird one that I can't explain, but tense facial muscles, that feel like you are trying to smile or frown, but you are not, like sinus pressure.
I have bad reactions to most anti-depressants, Cymbalta lasted about two months (awesome two months truthfully). I am presently taking small dose of lamictal and trying buspar, so far anxiety is still a problem.
I think I told you all this stuff because I feel like I need someone to understand, and I want someone someday to feel understood by reading my symptoms.
Anyway, back to my question. Doctor told me to wait until I had down time to take antibiotics because of the possible herx (I always get that!) So I am waiting for spring break to take it. I have never had a known tick bite but I have grown up in tick country where you brush the ticks off of your clothes after you play or take dogs for walk. I have recently taken two off my son. So, this is a really long post, if you made it this far, thank you. The doctor said I could have had Lyme since I was a kid and had periods of flares, and it lays dormant other times. I am having trouble wrapping my mind around it because there is no clear cut test for it. After I take the antibiotics , I am sending my test to local lab and to New York. What do you all think? I have been venting to friends and family, and they don't have a clue...
