Hi. I am new to the Lyme board and have a question. I was diagnosed with Lyme in 2000 after multiple attacks of optic neuritis. since it was already in my nervous system by then could I still be affected by this even 12 years down the road? I'm just really getting serious about searching for answers. thanks!

Yes it is possible for Lyme to still be affecting you, if you weren't adequately treated 12 years ago. Best thing to do is find a Lyme-Literate Medical Doctor (LLMD) for evaluation and treatment.

Make a new post here to request recommendations for LLMD's near you (list your state in the subject), and make sure to enable email in your profile because we have to email you doctor names because we aren't allowed to post them on the board.

Also, you can contact ilads.org and ask for doctor recommendations if you are outside the US.

Hi kat, yes it is absolutely possible. It is my opinion that once you have chronic lyme, you will always have chronic lyme. The lyme bacteria is extremely resistant. It makes sense that if it invades every part of your body, it would be almost impossible to eradicate every single organism. That being said, our bodies are meant to constantly fight off infection which I believe it can do once it becomes manageable. Just my opinion of course.

Many people see flareups or occurences with stress which is when your body's immune system is weakened. Have you been experiencing symptoms?? Just curious, how were you treated 12 years ago?
