Lyme disease.. pretty confused!

Okay so I've had a lot of joint pain since the summer, my neck hip and toe. I went to physical therapy ( bc we thought maybe i just pulled a muscle in my neck and hip being that i am a kennel attendant ) but it did nothing so my dr said to go get blood work which I did and came back that I have a joint disease (spondyloarthopathy) and something with my HLA-B27 came up positive, at that time lyme disease was negative. this test was done on january 22 2013 so doctor put me on naproxen, it didn't really do much, so then he also put me on prednisone.. which did help with the joint pain

Then in mid feb my knee swelled up with fluid doctor drained it and came back positive for Lyme.. Started me on doxycycline was on it fur 2 weeks did nothing, I had my knee drained 2 other times while i was on the antibiotic.. so now I have a picc line in my arm and I am getting 2 grams of rocephin at the hospital everyday, been on it since march 21., had my knee drained for the 4th time last week

The dr tested the fluid that came out of my knee last week, and it came back negative for Lyme. So why is my knee swollen again? And why do my joints still hurt? Maybe the test was a false positive?

I was put on naproxen also, it did not help me. My knees hurting and getting swollen was one of my first symptoms.

My joints hurt all the time, I do have Lyme, one positive test, and two neg. I do know most of the test are not very accurate, so I would treat the symptom , not the test. I have never had a picc line, because the doctors here said I cured myself, so I don't know to much about that.

I don't see many false positive test, just false neg. I hope you get the answers you need, sounds like it could be Lyme .

KimT - Yes, sounds like a simple false negative to me. This is very common with Lyme. You may also have one of the very nasty confections as well. You need additional testing and a LLMD expert if your symptoms persist.

I had a very similar experience to your own and had to have my right knee drained twice. Absolutely all my tests were positive for Lyme though.

For me the swelling and pain only went away with continual antibiotics. Unfortunately, after a year of treatment my incredible knee pain is now back and has even spread to my shoulders.

If you haven't already, it would be helpful for you to start with reading through the thread at the top of the forum titled,"New to Lyme?...Start here!!", as it is packed full of important information, symptom lists (as Lyme rarely occurs by itself), helpful links and pdf's, how to detox when one has these infections, and a list of questions that you can ask any doctor that you are seeking treatment from!

We also have a pretty good search function on this forum to help you narrow down your search for information from past posts. We must be our own health advocates now and the best thing to arm yourself with is knowledge about our infections and the different ways to treat them!

It's quite likely (and is usual) that the prednisone pushed the Lyme infection into a chronic state - chronic Lyme often comes back with a negative test result. I sure wish when Lyme was even a slight possibility that doc's would stop giving prednisone!!!
