So I choose to no longer garden which was my passion. I am sad to see my flowers taken over by weeds but it is what it is. Instead I thought I will make a beautiful silk flower wreath with my favorite flowers. Went to Michaels got supplies etc. Hot glued everything and was putting the finishing touches on it when out crawls a tick!

I just never thought about ticks being in the wreaths but then I noticed there were still leaves in the wreath. Of all the wreaths I could have picked I picked the one with a tick!

Just an fyi to others.

May I ask why you no longer garden?

If it was your passion,why have you given it up?

My garden is so vital to my healing that I am prepared to take the risk of ticks,so much was taken away from me,

the buggers are not going to deprive me of my little piece of heaven.

I am one of those who is tick magnet. Ticks literally crawl off pets and my husband to bite me! (ok that happened once). I remain super cautious as I regain my health. Two years ago I was contemplating how to kill myself to avoid living in the condition I was in, now I have my life back and I do not want to mess with that. Perhaps if I ever get a tick proof gardening outfit I may entertain the idea but not now.

I can understand what you're saying,fortunately I'm not that attractive to ticks!

My dogs are another matter,I have to use Frontline during the tick season,actually I'd prefer not to but nothing else seems to work.

I'm so sorry that you have had to stop gardening sad I love my garden,it's my great relaxation activity although not without dangers,as we all know.

I wish you continued healing and a tick free future.

Maybe somebody will invent an astronaut type gardening suit,wouldn't that be cool!

That's a shame you feel you have to give it up. I can understand. I assume you've tried tucking your pant legs into your socks and a long sleeved shirt tucked in and gloves that got up to your elbows over long sleeves. That's what I'd have to do if we had a lot of ticks around. I've never seen one in our 15+ years here and I think I would've by now.

Gardening is my passion too and brings me a lot of peace. I grow a variety of ornamentals and food crops. I just feel better when I'm out there, maybe in part because of the forested areas around us.

Go to your library and get some garden books to plan for the future or just to enjoy. I like the Fine Gardening magazine myself.

There's always house plants too. Try orchids, they'd challenge you some. There's indoor citrus too that can set fruit and they have sweet smelling flowers. Cacti don't take much work and can go dry for a long time, so they would be better than orchids. Just a thought.

Thanks for the ideas, have always been interested in orchids. I still do potted plants on the porches which make me happy.

I had to give up gardening for a while - I was just too ill to be out of the house doing anything - but once I started healing and could then tolerate the exercise and the heat, I've used that & my goats to complete my healing. Getting my hands in the dirt and growing my own food is healing in it's own way to me.

I too am a tick magnet, and although it's nothing like it used to be, I still attract more than most people. We put down these granules - Bug-B-Gon by Ortho - twice a year, which takes care of most of the bugs, then I use a spray every day when I go out. It's all worth it to me, as these things are now my passion!!

*I don't receive any proceeds or anything else from Ortho - I just believe it's a really good product!!

 OK, heeby jeebies here!

I read that guinea hens love to eat ticks and will clear out a space well. Permethrin coated clothes are out there, also net clothes that might help.

 5 gallon buckets will support a good potato or tomato plant on your porch.

 Maybe that nasty jolt you got from the tick on your grapevine was a little hint that you can't hide away? I know you are sensible to reduce your exposure, but maybe you can work out some parts of you garden which are relatively safe? Your garden is good for your spirit.

Well, since I am not in your situation myself I know I have no room to judge. I do hope you expand your indoor gardening to bring in the fresh oxygen and the joy of watching things grow.

Yes please add a picture of the wreath! So sorry you feel that way. I don't garden but I have one plant in my house and it brings me such joy! I enjoy seeing gardens and wonderfully landscaped homes. I can see how it brings peace. I hope you increase the indoor garden and one day I hope to read that you are gardening again! :-)
