Possible Lyme Disease - Doxycycline 200mg for 14 days

Hi there,

My girlfriend and I recently moved to Finland (2 weeks today) and on arrival we headed straight for a cabin trip in the woods. Everyone on the trip got bitten really bad by mosquitoes and we thought nothing of it.

Fast forward to this week and one of my girlfriends bite looked like it was getting infected. She had a large red rash around the bite, so yesterday we went to the doctors to see what they thought.

We saw a nurse and she gave us the name of an anti-biotic cream to get; anyways - none of the pharmacies has it in stock and this morning the rash had started to go a bit purple in the centre, so I sent her straight back to the doctors.

The doctor said she hasn't seen anything like it, but said to be safe to take Doxycycline 100mg 2 times a 14 days to prevent Lyme Disease.

Is this enough? If it's not enough; what should we do? I doubt there are any Lyme Disease specialists here in Finland. I'm glad that they even suggested she could have Lyme Disease, as I'm sure a lot of doctors would have fobbed it off as something else, but any help would be appreciated :).

Sorry about your girl friends bite. Is she experiencing any symptoms aside from the rash? In answer to your question - No 14 days of 100 mgs of doxy is not enough. That is actually a similar dose to what they prescribe for acne...:/

If your girlfriend doesn't have symptoms, I would recommend going on herbal protocol for a few months to be safe. There are a lot out there. I recommend Buhners b/c many use it, it is safe and well studied and there is a lot of information online about it. www.buhnerhealinglyme.com

Make sure your lady is taking probiotics (min. 30 billion/day) and detoxing. There is a lot of information on the "New to Lyme, Start Here" thread. Feel free to ask more questions!

Thanks for your reply.

The only other symptoms she has had is being a bit more tired and a stiff neck; but she has suffered from that for as long as I have known her (primarily due to stress - and we have only just moved).

We'll get some probiotics tomorrow fo'shure. We can't do bath detoxing as we don't have a bath! Are there any other methods for doing this?

She could do a detox foot bath (you can pamper her!) There are lots of recipes on the New to Lyme thread :). Antibiotics in general make me tired. Just keep an eye on her and maybe email the member that had the dr in the UK (just in case).

Ah, good idea :).

You mentioned Probiotics; do you have any recommendations? I assume products like Activia won't have the required colonies?

Right. Although kefir and yogurt for me is good. Ultimate Flora is good and if you type in probiotics lyme in the search you'll see there is a lot of information. Just make sure it is a good probiotic that has been refridgerated (also store in the fridge too)

Does anyone know if the doxyceline used to prevent Malaria exactly the same as the one to treat Lyme Disease?

The actual dose that your girlfriend needs to be on to be should be 300 - 600 mgs of Doxy a day (divided into 2 doses) and for at least 2 - 3 months.

The Lyme bacteria replicates at a very slow rate - most bacteria take only hours, the Lyme bacteria takes 3 - 4 weeks. That's why she needs to be on the abx for so long.
