I have been taking meds for lyme for 3 weeks. I am so sick and about to lose my mind. rages, confusion, mood swings, crying, suicide thoughts, feel like I am going crazy, headaches, pain at base of neck, chest pain, anxiety, nausea, muscle aches, foot pain. I did not feel this terrible until I got on my meds for lyme. I called my md and asked to decrease the dosage on the rifampin.

he decreased it too 300 mg every other day. still taking the azithromycin.

has anyone else had this reaction? I feel like I am going to die.

Hi I had a bad reaction to the doxycycline. I had to switch to amoxicillin at high doses. This has worked very well for me with another medicine. The first months are the worst but you will stabilize. New symptoms do surface all the time though. If you dont see improvement soon change meds or increase them. Sorry and hope you are feeling better soon. :)

Yes, mystery, starting treatment can cause a lot of symptoms.  I have been in treatment for 13 months and have just started to feel a bit better.  I didn't have any let up of symptoms for a whole year.  I anticipated feeling really sick when I first started treatment......just went with the flow, so to speak.

You may want to discuss with your doctor the option of taking a benzo to minimize the effects of the medicine until your infection load decreases or until your body gets used to the medication. Even a therapeutic dose can make such a huge difference in the quality of life.

Many doctors suggest cycling of the antibiotics. it makes sense. You simply go off of it for a few days. Give your body a break. I find I have to flush the neurotoxins.

I have found the for aches Taurine, Repair enzymes, white willow bark extract, and if nothing else works I have to take Xanax. it's a bear to get off of it but it controls the headaches. The pain is neurological from the neurotoxins given off by the bacteria when they die.

i have also found that whirlpool followed by cold pool helps immensely. Must be followed by cold pool. it increases the effectiveness of the antibiotic. In the last three months,I had started taking colloidal silver 10 ppm. I have researched and have an outstanding article that show the synergistic effect with antibiotics. Makes sense.

The herxes ere intense. i am now on just the colloidal silver. 1 TBSP 10 ppm. i weigh 160 lbs.

Use your own judgement.

Intense herxing, or healing crisis as it's also known, is not good as it can slow or even stop the healing that's supposed to be happening.

Are you detoxing as much as you can? Often symptoms of a herx can be either reduced or completely alleviated by detoxing. Detoxing really isn't a choice, many times your body will force you into doing it by the symptoms that just keep increasing.

Sometimes the simple detoxing that we talk about isn't enough, some have to use binders. These are substances that will bind to toxins (& everything else in your system like nutrients and abx) and usher them out of the body. They must be taken 2 hours after any food, meds or supplements and 2 hours before you take any more food, meds or supplements. So you have to have a 4 hour time slot free of food. meds and supplements available - but they work!

Activated Charcoal is one of several good ones and it can be bought in many places over the counter.

I hope you can hang in there with the rifampin mystery1.

I was feeling like you when I was on it a year ago. My ambien didn't work which is what rifampin does--blocks it in the liver-- and was getting next to no sleep.

It was my PCP who was following me on this and when I called office, a message was relayed to her and don't know if she was told the part about the pharmacist saying it would be ok to up the ambien.

Instead she told me to quit rifampin.

In spite of the fact that I was herxing and not sleeping, my brain felt better. Can't really explain, but I felt I was getting rid of bart.

So here I am a year later, still battling it. I was also given minocycline this spring by PCP and doing better without herxing. She made me stop because I was supposed to take something with it and she said I needed to see LLMD.

This time LLMD put me on herbs, but kind of wish I was at least on mino +.

Oh, and consider taking the rifampin capsule apart and mixing half with applesauce to reduce your dose and see if you can handle it.

I wish I had tried that. Heard about it later.

wow thanks everyone for the support. it is hard for me to believe that I got so much sicker herx ing. it has gotten a little better but not much since I decreased the dosage on rifampin.

traveler, I am going to try detox and i have some charcoal, bentonite clay, and chorella. will also talk to md.

korissa, this is the most terrible part of being on rifampin. I cannot sleep and I never feel rested. I am also in withdrawal from klonipin, a benzo november will be one year being off. I take ambein knowing it is related to benzos but it does not help much.

I hate to go back on something like xanax or ativan, but I feel I have no choice if this anxiety does not let up. I am also having panic attacks.

I was able to get out and go visit my horse but now I have not seen her in 3 weeks and I am in horse withdrawal too. lol. I love my paso fino, sonadora.

I am also on disability and now I am up for review and have to meet with an md for sea in 1 week. oh teh stress of lymeland.

Mystery1 , I think cutting back on your dosages or cycling them with whatever you are taking is a good idea. My LLMD likes to say, " slow and steady wins the race!" Im very sensitive to meds so I really adjust my dose based on my symptoms. I have found I can use only small doses of anything!!! I think some people are just more sensitive than others, Lyme or not!!
