I know some of you are using it, or have used it, and that I might want to start slow.

I'm on 2 abx right now, and my doctor suggested the Houttuynia. She also wants me to add another abx, so I'll be on 3 abx and the Houttuynia. Seems like a lot.

But, I think I'm ready to try it because I'm already taking Bactrim DS twice a day, and Biaxin, and not really experiencing massive herxing. According to my doc, the Bactrim doesn't have a big herxing affect.

That being said, I got the capsules of the Houttuynia, and I believe they are 250 mg. They are from Zhang.

I think the bottle says 3x a day, but I'm guessing I'll start with just one.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Do you have the HH or HH-2? The HH-2 is the double-strength which I just started taking and I find it's bothering my stomach a little. I called the company and they said it can take a week or two for your system to adjust.

This is the fishy stuff and you get a bit of an aftertaste even though it's a cap. I hear the root stinks to high heaven and this one contains the entire plant as opposed to the one Traveler used which tasted good because it's just leaf. This may explain why Zhang's hits the stomach while others may be easier on the system. So far the herxes haven't been bad for me and I'm on 2 a day to start.

Thanks for letting me know your experience. I had no idea about the fish smell because I haven't opened them yet, but thanks for the warning. lol.

Did you ever look into trying the leaf version like Traveler? I wonder if it would be easier to handle.

I wouldn't worry about the smell as it's barely noticeable because it's encapsulated. I just know about it from reading so it's in my head that there's rotting dead fish in those caps..LOL

I've also read the HH is much easier on the system than the HH-2 so you may not have a stomach issue at all with those.

I'm thinking of maybe trying a tincture from woodland essence which is extracted from the leaf. If Trav did well with the leaf version then it seems there must be little difference in the effectiveness of what plant parts are used even though Zhang must think otherwise.

We use the powdered herb from 1stChineseHerbs. We were able to make it up to 1/4 tsp TID in infusion, but started herxing (our daughter with panic attacks) above that. Buhner's associate said for us to stay at 1/4 tsp TID, but that we would have to use it for a year or more. The powdered herb isn't fishy, but I almost wish it was. Usually the yuckier the better.

I haven't commented on this thread since you all were talking about the caps rather than the medicinal tea that I used. I used the medicinal tea for 9 months with no breaks from it.

It wasn't hard and was most definitely the best tasting medicinal tea I've used so far!! LOL! It tasted more like regular black tea used frequently for iced tea - but boy oh boy did it ever create a herx!! It took me three weeks on 1/2 doses & detoxing like a mad man before I could get past them.

So at this point, it wasn't the yuckier it is the better it works, fortunately! I had enough yucky things I had to use!! LOL!

I can remember when everyone using any of the HH's said on different Lyme forums all over the internet would say how bad it smelled - so something must have changed.

CaldoniaSun does mention the fisy taste, and personally I think perhaps something may be missing now. Why the change I wonder?



phsinvent says that Zhangs HH caps taste fishy and that the other caps are extracted differently, perhaps removing some constituents in the process. Our is not an extract though, it is the complete herb ground to powder.

in reply to the fishy taste ;). I actually really like the taste of it. Even Buhner says that he doesn't quite get the fishy taste and finds it pleasant. I've used the powder and the tea from different suppliers and I actually like the taste. I guess I would describe it more as a savory/salty taste but not fishy.

My son takes Zhang's HH. We started him on half the child dosage and built up. So, we started by opening up the capsule and re-encapsulate with a lower dosage. Our experience is that it is fine in capsule. When we open it, it smells, not too bad. But if you put that stuff on your tongue, I tried a tiny tiny speck, it is INCREDIBLY FISHY. I didn't throw up on it though.
