candida diet: to ferment or not to ferment (foods)?

Is anyone doing the candida diet?

I use fermented foods like kefir, sauerkraut, and kombucha bc of my history of c. diff., and some websites say you can't do fermented foods on the candida diet, then others say you can. I saw one website that said not to do s. boullardi, which is essential for c. diff.

I'm confused.

Im on a strict no-sugar or carb diet.

I wasnt aware there was any conflict with fermented foods? Some are not all that easy for me to digest (like kimchi and sauerkraut), but overall Ive had no problem.

However I did want to address s. boullardi (saccharomyces boulardii). This probiotic saved my life. I was on hardcore ABXs for over a year and really I would have died (or would have wanted to die) without this. Im not kidding.

There has been no other probiotic or supplement in my entire life that has so immediately and positively impacted my health.

I know; you're right of course. I don't know if it saved my life, but it certainly kept me alive when I had C. Diff.

I thought I was going to die as well. I had turned my face to the wall, and stopped drinking. It was too much of an effort to eat and drink.

On that note, I'm going to keep taking it.

I was referring to a diet specifically for Candida. Does the Paleo diet help you with the C. Diff. issues? I'm assuming that's what you're referring to?

Are you on an herbal protocol for Lyme?

Hi teragram,

I've looking into this a little bit as I still have mild yeast issues if I do a carb white sugar bread overload. :)

The kombucha should be fine. It does have yeast in it but the majority of the strains are s. boulardii. Unless you have a major yeast infection. I would not do a ton of fermented foods that are pickled like sauerkraut, pickles, kim chi BUT yougurt and kefir are good.

Is yeast a major issue currently or are you just trying to keep them at bay?

I don't have vaginal yeast infections, but I suspect I might have systemic candida.

What symptoms do you have that lead you to systemic candida?

Continuous sinus infections, a white, coated tongue, bladder problems, former long-term use of abx., sugar cravings, history of c. diff., chemical sensitivities, and etc. Many of the symptoms are similar to those of Lyme anyway. Margaret

Im confused, isnt the yeast in fermented foods of the beneficial kind or is this not the case? Fermented foods will not cause yeast flareups correct?

That does sound like yeast Margaret. It really depends on your immune system I think. I was for the most part able to keep yeast under control but some individuals are super sensitive. If you introduce more yeast it is just adding fuel to the fire.

There is a difference between fermented foods though. Some don't contain yeasts at all like yougurt and kefir but others like pickled fermented food do contain yeast but I do not know population wise what the percentage of different strains are.

I love kombucha and my husband makes it now. I never had a problem with it but I never noticed an immediate difference either like I did with yougurt.

Check your yeast and other contents - are the "good ones" we need to populate the intestines with? Then they are good to have in your diet, no matter what kind of diet you are using.

You can't leave a 'void'. Once you clear out the bad bacteria/yeast it will come right back if the good bacteria/yeast isn't put in it's place.

That's an interesting answer. Well, I realize I ingest prebiotic yeasts anyway, bc I take S. Boullardi to treat the c. diff. I had for two years. Going off the S. Boullardi isn't an option.

What I would like to know, however, is: Has anyone else noticed a benefit from Kombucha (or not)?

unpasteurized fermented foods are excellent for relining the gut with good flora/bacteria. Kombucha, I'd be mindful as there can be left over sugar especially if you aren't brewing it yourself. For systemic candida, absolutely eat ferments, consider coconut water kefir and pau'd'arco tea is great!

Kissa, I was surprised to see that old thread, but thanks for your input!

I now know to check kombucha labels for sugar content.

I did make some of my own kombucha, but then I have no clue how much sugar is left over when you make it yourself.

I buy coconut water kefir whenever I get a chance, but I'm trying to figure out if there is a way I can make it myself, bc it's soo expensive!

I've been drinking kombucha that I make myself since this summer and really don't notice much difference. I will keep making it along with my fermented veggies, I fermented cranberries, apple & pineapple the other day with a culture. Hopefully this will keep yeast infections at bay.

Cultures for health also has water & milk kefir grains as well as kombucha starters for sale. There's a ton of great information about all of those things and more as well.
