Dr. Mercola sells probiotics from his on-line store. However, in the last year, he has undercut his own sales by posting a series of articles on the superiority of fermented foods.

Occasionally I see comments on this forum implying that fermented foods have a lower bacteria count than a probiotic capsule. The real truth is that a serving of fermented food may have as many organisms as a whole bottle of probiotic capsules! I have seen this kind of claim from many different sources.

I have personally found that making my own fermented foods is more health-effective and cost-effective compared to purchasing the expensive probiotics that I used to use. Dr. Mercola has undercut his own financial bottom line, but his heart is in the right place.

Hmm, I just hit something that knocked me off. So I'll try again!

I've often wondered if they had enough probiotics in them and assumed they did. It was a common practice in the days before stores everywhere.

Yes, his heart is in the right place. He has talked about the fact that he takes very few supplements and focuses on a good diet instead. I imagine that he gets help in the kitchen so he can focus on helping others and continues to do his exercise routine and learn more about his venture into gardening. I'm glad he's doing that so he can pass on the best ways of growing food too.

I want to do my own fermented foods some day when I can go to Oz to get a brain. :) Cabbage is a good first one to do, so I may just do that for now. I can get good quality fermented foods in the store at least, with a good variety. There's also a Weston Price group here that does a lot of fermented foods. They ferment anything they can get their hands on! I used to go to their meetings, but with my Lyme infection, I found it hard to be in a group of healthy people who could focus on it all easier. I didn't know we had Lyme disease then.

Hi Don,

Great to see you posting!  After you posted this I had bought a cabbage and wished I would have remembered to ferment it instead of stir-frying it with onions and carrots, duh!!

I am already making my next food shopping list so I will add Cabbage and other ingredients and I really want to try this!  Right now there is a winter storm going on so I will be shoveling lots and lots of snow!!

Yes, one of the projects that blew up. Making my own sauerkraut in the Lyme fog…. Of course I forgot to put something under the jars so they overflew with the kraut juices everywhere… then I forgot to refrigerate them when they were done and had to throw the whole thing away. When my brain is back talk to me about making my own sauerkraut again OK?

For some strange reason I also had the insane idea that I could grow my own wheatgrass. It ended up with one of my new helpers asking me if I was a scientist after he saw all the mold that accumulated on the wheat. That's how you know you have Lyme. No reality! Thanks for the welcome Garden Peace!

I made several batches of fermented veggies, but got tired of the vinegary taste. I like my homemade Kombucha though!! I used to make Coconut Kefir, but had a hard time getting it right.

I wonder if a dairy allergy would mess me up regarding goat-milk kefir?

To all of you: I can't over emphasize the importance of pro- prebiotics, and fermented foods. I had "the scourge," and it was horrible; can't do abx anymore. So please, please, for my sake, just do it! And not once a day either.

It would depend on what kind of an allergy you have to milk. Goat milk is much easier to digest as the molecules are smaller and those that are allergic to lactose (the majority of us with a milk allergy) will usually find that goat's milk is tolerated much better. If you have a milk casein allergy though, it might not be a wise thing to try.

I have a lactose allergy and I could drink and use all the goats milk I wanted! smilewinkgrin

We now have a store with a regular supply of raw goat milk. I thought it would run out too fast to get any since so many people here are into healthy foods.

Casein allergies are often much more severe than lactose allergies. Many with a casein allergy can't have even milk solids of any type in their foods, so if that's the case, you will need to be very, very careful. My young grandson (2 1/2 yrs) has the casein allergy and is life threatening for him.

I surely wouldn't encourage you to try any milk products if you have a casein allergy that's very severe at all.

Oops! I don't know how severe it is; I just know that I'm allergic to milk, and I'm too scared to try Lactose-free milk.

I've had dairy products before, and they gave me diarrhea and a few other issues, but that was basically it.

Not much fun though, regardless. I'm sorry about your grandson. Be very careful in restaurants, esp. if you live in the rural South!

I've had wait people say to me, "Oh you can't eat wheat? Then I'll give you white." They think I mean that I can't eat whole wheat bread!

Hi and happy new year to my forum friends!!! I am glad that Deejavu has become motivated to make her own fermented foods. I am planning to increase my repertoire this year beyond cabbage, beets, carrots, onions, and peppers.

P.S. Heather is enjoying her "training trip" in south Florida with her college swim team. Her good health continues despite the CDC positive Western Blot and low CD-57 test (29) that she had in the beginning of August this year.
