I live in the country anyway, and I've given up on trying to keep critters out (except for coyotes and bears), and I think my fence probably wouldn't even keep those out.
Since ticks feast on birds (I think primarily songbirds from what I remember), my guess is that essentially nowhere is safe from ticks, except maybe downtown Manhattan, say, Times Square (?), the Sahara desert, and maybe Death valley. Oh, and Antarctica.
Yes, I think migratory songbirds were the worst hit. Sad. Yes, I feel sorry for the birds.
