They had my filly on very high dose antibiotics for about a month after she returned. She was about 100 lbs and was on over 1000 mg of doxy. She perked right up after the IV abx. I usually feel better off of the abx than on them. Problem is I cannot stop taking them or the disease, mine is Lyme, comes right back. It depends on a lot of things, mainly how long youve had the disease. If your son had it a short time and got the medication then monitor him. Keep the medicine on the counter and put him back on if the symptoms return. People with acne can take 100-200 mg of doxy a day as a maintenance dosage to prevent flareups so maybe consider the same for him if are not comfortable with cutting him off the meds. My relapsing has been mostly due to the Lyme not ana. From what I understand with the ana, the animal remains a carrier for the rest of their life. Symptoms are severe at first but respond rapidly to abx. I would just be leary of the lyme as well bc the doxy keeps the Lyme symptoms in check.
