Extremely itchy!! SO SO aggravating!

I know my liver enzymes are (or were) slightly elevated (tested 3 days after surgery - so pain meds and anthesia could have been part of the issue) at AST 35 & ALT 42.

I've been treating Lyme for 8 weeks with Zithromax and several vitamins and supplements. Started milk thistle yesterday to support my liver.

In the last couple weeks started getting really itchy from time to time. When I have it, it's my only symptom. Foot baths seem to relieve the itching for awhile (1-2-ish hours). Then... It's back again.

I'm itching like crazy today... My skin itches SO bad I feel extremely irritable and can't focus on anything else.

I saw my LLMD on Friday and she rechecked my enzymes, but looked at my calendar (log of symptoms) and asked "so what is this itchy thing about"... Like it was unusual/something she hasn't seen before. I know she's been an LLMD for 35 years... So I'm nervous about this symptom and if its common...

Will this ever stop? If you've had it can you please respond and tell me how long you had, what you think the cause is (herx,allergy,etc.), and what you did for some relief?

Hi Delmar - sorry to hear of your suffering. That itching thing is awful. I had that MANY years ago - I believe that was one of my very first Lyme symptoms. It was so bad I wanted to jump out of my skin. I do remember doing a liver cleanse at that point and it suddenly lessened and it eventually did go away.

I had severe itching as an allergic reaction to doxy. Could your itching be a response to your antibiotics?

I sometimes get a very "prickly" kind of itch that comes and goes. My LLND told me it was from the toxin build-up. She told me to take a concentrated bath that include organic apple cider vinegar. I found it quite helpful for the itching.

Here is the procedure:

Put about 5 inches of water in the bathtub. While the water is running add 1 cup of Epsom salts and 2 cups of organic apple cider vinegar.
Sit in the bath with a measuring cup or some type of container and pour the bath water all over yourself for 5-10 minutes.
Then fill up the bath tub and add another cup of Epsom salts.
Soak for another 20 minutes.

This is something I do when needed. Hope it helps you. Good luck.

I have always had the itching. It comes and goes. Got really bad when I was pregnant. The only thing that worked for me was Pine Tar bar soap. I'm not sure why it worked but it got rid of the itching and the rash if I had one. So frustrating!

I have itching off and on, right now it's the bottoms of my legs, they itch so bad I can scratch the skin right off of them.

I believe it's a symptom of Lyme and who knows what else.

Benadryl stops my itching.

Yes, one can develop an allergy to abx anytime.

Itching may also indicate imbalanced microbes on the skin and may suggest a yeast overgrowth...I hope you're on probiotics?

Itching can also occur from nerve irritation or be another manifestation of neurological pain. Antihistamine creams usually help this type of itching.

I have started itching the past couple weeks - but I'm not on antibiotics...but I have a lot of nerve issues...so it could very well be nerve related.
I have nerve pain on my left s/b, arm, hand, finger...as well as vibrations mostly in my right leg, and muscle twitches...and sometimes shooting pains randomly in different body parts.
I'm chalking it all up to lyme affecting my peripheral nervous system.

Back in 2008 or so, I had several months of itching that could not be explained. I'm wondering now if this was the beginning of my symptoms. It suddenly left me one day and has not returned even after starting treatment last year.

Also, I took Bactrim for several months with no issues. When I stopped/restarted taking it, I developed a rash on my neck. This happened two times so I know it was an allergic reaction. I totally agree with Razzle - one can develop an abx allergy anytime.

The extreme itching has been gone now for a couple weeks. Thank goodness. And knock on wood... It was/is an awful symptom. I get a hint of it every now and then but nothing like before.

Just so weird! Like everything else with this Lyme circus.

I haven't yet been diagnosed with Lyme (appointment with LLMD in Sept), but I've had many symptoms of it, including the bulls eye rash and pink eye. And I have read that itchiness is a symptom of Lyme. My itchy areas come and go--back, legs, thighs, corners of my eyes, arms, ankles and tops of my feet.
