Regardless of how long the bacteria sticks around or how "permanent" lyme disease is, there is undoubtedly a great degree of difficulty in getting rid of it to the point of clearing symptoms. And no doubt it takes much longer than a few weeks.
There are many ways these organisms can "hide" and survive in the body over long periods of time, even despite treatment. There is plenty of scientific research and anecdotal, clinical evidence to support this to the point that it cannot really be argued by a rational person who has done any bit of research. (Not pointing fingers at you, I'm pointing fingers at people in the medical field)
