I thought it was a tiny spider, grabbed a tissue to kill it, it was a tick!

A few weeks ago, sitting on my back deck with my husband...and he says, "don't move - there's something in your hair". Of course I let out a yelp and jump up. He flicks it off and it's an engorged tick. Eeww I hate those little buggers.

Girlie, engorged ticks don't get on people, unless it fell off an animal above his head. They drop off! Ticks attach and stay attached until engorged. Then they either start a new phase of the life cycle, or lay eggs. That would worry me!
Not to scare anybody, but ticks can infest houses. Gross! I get worried when I see one inside, but I've never seen more than one every few months. In the last few years, I've found three on my pillow!! Not engorged, thank goodness!
I do (or did, when I could work) deal with a lot of ticks. Hate, hate, hate them, even more now!

AML - So, are you saying it was engorged because it just feasted on me? OMG! So, once they've feasted on something, it's not possible for it to wander over to something/someone else??
So, if it bit me, and I'm already on doxycycline...am I safe? I won't be doubly ill will I?

They only have one host per life stage. Were you under a tree? Maybe it dropped off a squirrel onto you?
I'm sorry, that would scare me. I don't want to scare you, but you need to know. I don't know about
the doxy. I would definitely do it longer!
I'm a vet, so the tick life cycle was drilled into our heads.
It's funny, I've never been overly worried about
ticks. I've gotten them my whole life. I just yank them off my kids and me. But you better believe my kids will get doxy when I find another one.

How big was it? I can't imaged an adult tick engorging on your head and you not feeling it washing your hair. But if it was a nymph, I could see it. Why can't they all be huge, so we can see/feel them?

It was big. And it was on the top of my hair...not on my scalp. And to get on our deck, we pass by a tree - mini maple leaf tree (can't remember the name) - and a few branches always touch my hair. We have lots of birds - in the trees - could they have the ticks? I did not see or feel a bite. I checked myself over pretty good...but I guess i could have missed it.
I am treating for a lot longer, so if it did bite me...I should be covered.

Yes, birds can. So maybe it detached from them and fell on you. If it had engorged on you, it might still crawl to the top as it made its way to the ground. I've never seen any info on whether they would crawl across your scalp down to the ground or come to the top of the hair where crawling might be easier.
Man, I hope it fell off its host onto you!

Does it matter if it bit me again - if I already have lyme disease anyway?

Well, there are different strains and of course all the coinfections. So I would say it does.
But like I said before, a huge adult engorged tick is harder to miss. So I bet it fell on you.
