Ever since I saw an episode of 60 minutes or Dateline...or? where they looked at the dosages of meds for men vs. women I've been wondering about
med dosages. They have found that some women taking sleeping meds are more prone than men to wake up with the effects still in their system. When they looked at the research done on the sleeping pills, they found that all the research was done on men, not women. This was due to the fact that they didn't want the women's hormones affecting the outcomes. It was discussed that in the near future they may be having two doses - one for women, and one for men.
So, this brings me to my concern. There doesn't seem to be dosage based on weight, either. But, there is for children a lower dose.
So, I'm 126 lbs and I'm taking the same amount of doxy that a 250 lb man would take? But a 60 pound child would be prescribed a lower amount wouldn't they? So, the reason I'm questioning this, is I'm feeling a bit like the 400 mg daily doxy is a bit much. I can't put my finger on it, but I just feel toxic. But when I was ramping up and on 200 mg per day, I didn't feel that way.
Any thoughts?

There could be a lot of things going on that are making you feel toxic, I think you know most of them so I won't go into them unless you would like me to.
The biggest concern that I have is that anything less than 400 mgs hasn't been proven (to my knowledge anyway) to be effective at
effectively
treating Lyme disease - so it's not worth the risk of having to continue to live with an on-going infection if you were to lower the dose.
Talk with your LLND this Sat and ask what they believe you should do - you may find that herbs are the way for you to go since you feel toxic on the abx.

I've always wondered about
that! I don't give the same dose to a 50lb and a 100lb dog...

The effective recommended dosage for Borrelia (Lyme disease) is 2.5 mg of doxycycline per pound body weight. I weigh 143 lbs so 143 lbs x 2.5 mg/lbs is 357.5 mg of doxycycline would be my recommended dosage for effective Lyme treatment.
Girlie, you are 126 lbs ... So an effective dosage for you for Lyme is 315 mg daily. Usually the doctors just round up because doxy pills are usually in 100 mg. blood serum levels should make it to 5 ug/ml (micrograms of drug per ml). For minocycline it is cut in half, you only need 2.5 ug/ml. Minocycline is actually 2.85 times more tissue soluble (or fat soluble) than doxycycline is. And Lyme likes the tissues so that might be a good alternative.

So, that's a daily dose. I'm wondering if taking 300 mg once a day would be more effective than 200 mg twice a day.
Would get a higher spike in the blood.

Girlie,
I think that is a good question. At my lowest I was 113 pounds and prescribed 400 mg of doxy. I could only manage 300 mg a day though. I think it's because pills only come in standard doses.

Louise - I didn't take my doxy last night. You know sometimes when something just doesn't feel right? I can't put my finger on it, but something keeps making me feel like the 200 twice a day is too much, just not feeling right - can't explain it.
So, I'm thinking of 200 mg a.m and 100 mg. p.m.
I'll bounce if off the Dr. tomorrow. Yay! Finally a LL doc to speak to. and I think I get an hour and a half with him. Oh, I hope I like him...because there's no other choices...he's the one! I'm also pleased that he is a ND - I've always leaned towards the natural side of healing...so it's great!
