Hi Girlie...
No Dr. C did not get the MTHFR gene testing done for me or request to get that done. I just had a trip to see him last Wednesday, and I got re-tested with the igenex Lyme Western Blot IGG & IGM. (to see if I ever fully seroconverted with antibiotic therapy which we expect... because my first test was negative). And if this test turns negative then it is possible that I got JUST bartonella... Although I doubt that because I have had a full set of Lyme symptoms with my bartonella symptoms. Dr. MR said my test before was 'weakly positive'. I also got tested for anaplasmosis as I was getting some pain behind my eyes and Dr. Chan said it could be because of that. Dr. Chan did get me tested for Mycoplasma Pneumonia which i tested positive for. Finally I got my CD57 retested to see the extent that I have recovered from treatment. He also got me to check kidney & liver function to see how I am holding out on antibiotics.
I think the MTHFR gene mutation is a peice of the puzzle in getting well... And helps us detox better. But I think it is a smaller peice of the puzzle. For example:
Lyme (alone overloads and stresses the body) >co-infections> heavy metals > MTHFR mutation > detoxing
I think out all the issues, Lyme is the worst... And resolving this alone makes people feel like 70% better. Then you work your way up and have co-infections (some argue if you only had 1 co-infection the body of someone healthy could handle it). Heavy metals is usually less a priority in getting well but some people are really quite toxic for that ( I got heavy metal testing done myself and found to be toxic for both lead and mercury). MTHFR mutation is not as big... But because lyme overloads us with toxic proteins it can be an issue. I'm taking the supplement that is supposed to treat this issue though at nighttime... But I don't even know if I have it?! lol, I am taking it just in case. It is a special kind of folate. I figure I should be taking it since I am taking Septra DS which blocks bacterial folate production, so I am likely to be folate deficient anyways.
