I'm 4 weeks into taking Doxy at 200mg daily. And throughout that time I've been having suicidal thoughts almost constantly. This appears to be common enough but it's far more than I can cope with, especially as I'm to be on it for the best part of a year.

I don't wish to be on antidepressants so what is the best alternative to doxy? I'm currently trying to work in azithromycin 3 x weekly and eventually metronidazole for 5 days every four weeks. But currently having a hard time tolerating the relatively low dose of doxy.

These suicidal thoughts are new to me and are no joke, coupled with crippling fear and the feeling that I'm losing my mind. I'd like to think it's a healing crisis but it feels like it's been working up for a month now and is only getting worse day by day.

You could try the natural supplement, Sam-E to help your mood. My Lyme doctor recommended it for me and it really helped.

Believe me, I've tried a lot of things that enhance mood, that relax. Nothing is scaring this feeling away. I'm hoping for an antibiotic with a similar mechanism to doxy that I can switch to.

I am so sorry you are feeling this awful! From what you are writing it looks like the mental symptoms might be from too many toxins in your system. I had to do colonics 2x weekly for 5 months, then 1x weekly for 2 months, and now I am ready to go to 1x every other week. There was a time when I was doing colonics 2x weekly plus enemas on days when I did not have a colonic. On top of that FIR sauna, brushing, Cholestyramine, Epsom salt baths, etc. etc. The other thing that helped me was Holy Basil by New Chapter (Amazon). It did not resolve my feelings but it definitely took the edge off. I was also on Serene and CalmG by Neuroscience for a period of time and it made all the difference. Hope you find something that works! I did Doxy for 5 months and got to a point where I could not digest anymore. When that happened I went on silver and it really helped me.

I'm so very sorry this is happening to you. I also took Doxy in the beginning but it made me sick to my stomach.

I turned to alternative medicine (biological medicine) and one of the botanicals I took was Borrelogen which was invented by Dr. Jernigan (he had lyme as well).

I didn't know this about Borrelogen until years after I became well (this is a LUAT test comparing Borrelogen to antibiotics):

When one took 3 days of Borrelogen the average score for the LUAT™ test was 150 with many at 450, which shows the effectiveness of Borrelogen with helping the body recognize and deal with the Lyme bacteria.

My son just upped his doxy - was on 200mg / day for 3 months. He is also on prazosin for intrusive thoughts and prozac for mood and body movement - those will not be forever once the healing resolves.

He also takes Pinella brain nerve cleanse as he was on doxy for 5 weeks and not cleansing and things were getting worse and worse, a real mess - he will probably use pinella for a year or two - so important to get rid of the toxins.

I'm a mental mess too - doxy 200mg twice a day with tindamax, cymbalta - I don't think it is helping at all - I've always dealt with depression issues - I'm just so unhappy with everything.... never thought the doxy would cause this too - plus suppose to be on mepron, zithro and artimensin (but doing these every other day as they upset my stomach) - I'm also craving sugar - I've never wanted sweets I'm mostly a carb person but I've really cut back on that. This is such a mess - plus I get no support at home and work full time with no support there either.... Will life ever be normal and happy :(....

What does your doctor say about your issues with Doxy?

According to Dr. Burrascano in his "Advanced Topics in Lyme Disease" Amoxicillin with Probenecid is another abx that can be used. I would suggest that you take a look at that paper and even take it to your doctor if need be.

Sounds like if you have doxycycline, azithromycin, and metronidazole. You are pretty well covered!

If you are looking for a good alternative to doxycycline, it could be clarithromycin. So you could take doxycycline + clarithromycin + metronidazole.

Azithromycin doesn't treat neurolyme though, but it is a great tissue drug. Clarithromycin is kind of the better macrolide for Lyme and crosses into the brain.

Clarithromycin is also more effective on Lyme germs.
