It's not life threatening. He went in yesterday evening. He had severe abdominal and left sided back pain. For the past week he was having trouble moving his bowels. The hospital did a CT scan and MRI, they found a blood clot in the artery feeding his kidney. So he's in the hospital for a minimum of 3 days. The vascular surgeon will be talking to us later today.

They said heavy does of antibiotics can cause constipation. I thought everyone should know that tid bit of info.

Does anyone know if lyme creates blood clots? The doctor said having a blood clot in this location is extremely rare, unless there is a heart problem. His heart is fine.

Antibiotics kill good gut microflora, so yes, will definitely compromise gut function.

I'm glad they found the cause, but I'm sorry he has this to deal with. I pray that everything goes well.

I hope everything turns out ok. Please keep us posted on how it goes. Wish him good healing.

Lyme patients can have hypercoagulation issues. They will certainly test him for it.

Sorry to hear that. That's kind of scary.

Just make sure it gets taken care of. I wouldn't over emphasize the Lyme thing to doctors who may not be Lyme friendly.

Thank you everyone! I will read all the links you've posted, thanks again. I talked to the surgeon briefly over the phone, my husband was loopy from the pain meds. The doctor was NOT happy about the doses of antibiotics he is taken. Complete CDC mentality.

He told me that he can't find the clot. He doesn't know if it dissolved, moved or it's an injury. They will be doing a scan of some type tomorrow to see if plaque broke off his aorta near his heart and lodge itself in the artery leading to the kidney. He has damaged about 1/3 of his kidney, but the rest is functioning fine.

My husband's WBC is high and it has the doctor completely baffled. I don't have the greatest confidence in this hospital and staff. Perhaps Boston is the way to go in this case.

One thing I can about having Lyme, I can go toe to toe with doctors now and know what I'm talking about. I'm a mama bear when it comes to my family!

Hubby is finally home!! We never received a conclusive diagnoses. They are not sure what or why this happened. He's on the road to recovery though.

Glad to hear he's getting better.

Sad though that we all to often get out of hospital with a shady or no diagnosis. Let us know if you can lay your hands on bloodtests results that are out of range.

Im glad he is hom. Hope you got copies of all blood work and everything they did. Seems strange they dx blood clot then release with no dx

Everything was so strange! At first it was a blood clot then they said they couldn't find the blood clot. The best answer we got was, a arterial tear that cased the kidney damage. We of course are seeking a second opinion with another vascular surgeon. I will have to wait for all the blood work to be mail to me.

One of the strange parts is, he runs a low grade fever everyday for a couple of hours then it goes away. I do know his WBC count started out at 19,000 then went up to 21,000.

On the bright side his kidney is functioning normally. He has to remain on blood thinners for 3 to 6 months. Right now he has to give himself injections in the stomach morning and night.

Well, I'm sure glad he's back home now!! Does he have Lyme? Sorry I don't remember. It's not unusual for a person with Lyme to run a slight fever in the afternoon, or to have a high WBC.

Good news about his kidney function though!!

Please do let us know what they say during the 2nd opinion!

Yes, my husband has Lyme. So that is why he runs a fever. Thanks Traveler!
