Hello, I am new to this forum. I was diagnosed last year around October 30th(2013) with lyme disease. I do not know if they caught it early because I was very sick for over a month before they diagnosed and really who knows how long I had the bacteria prior to feeling sick. Anyways, I was treated with 2 weeks of doxycycline, and then I slowly began to regain strength and recover. But around May I started getting some symptoms again and the doctors did not think it was lyme related.. my mother convinced the doctors to give me another two weeks of doxy though and after that I felt better again. Currently I am having a few issues and I am really wondering if this is lyme related or not? Was I done with lyme after the first treatment? My symptoms at the time are fatigue, chest pain, headaches, chills, and irregular heart beat. Thank you all who took the time to read this.

Welcome to the forum. I sounds like you may have not been treated long enough. I suggest you find a lyme literate doctor that can diagnose any co-infections and get you the right treatment. I have a lot of the same symptoms, so yes it could be lyme. Best of luck!

Would you know of any lyme literate doctor near Canada manitoba?
Or would I have to go to the states?

Welcome to our community!
If you haven't yet, please do read through our "New to Lyme? Start Here!" thread that sits at the top of the forum. It's packed with important information about these infections, symptom lists, detoxing suggestions and there's a link to the ILADS (International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society) treatment recommendations and so much more!

If you will go to the ILADS site and take a look at their recommendations, you will see that they recommend that a person have high dose abx (antibiotics) like 400 - 600 mgs of Doxycycline for a minimum of 6 - 8 weeks. So the two weeks of abx wouldn't have done much of anything other than give you some symptom relief.

There are some alternative medicine practices in Ontario that I would be happy to share with you. Canada has shut down all regular MD's from treating these infections in the way that ILADS guidelines suggest are best due to the US's stance on this subject.

Of course you could choose to just come to the states for treatment as well, especially if you have somewhere you could stay - if you choose to do this, we can likely help you find a LLMD. Just let us know.

I am from B.C. Canada. I see a LLND in Richmond, B.C. (just outside of Vancouver)
I know it's a long way to go...but after the first visit, he does phone appointments for several appointments after.
I saw him end of August, and since then have had a phone follow up appt. in Sept, Oct. and have one scheduled for November. He prescribes antibiotics.

I think the first appt. was 1 1/2 hours and it was $180 and the follow ups have been 1/2 hour for $80.00
My Blue Cross plan 80% up to $500 per year.

80% of his patients have lyme disease. He has a casual approach...meaning he will discuss different options of treatment with you.

So, I guess for you...determining which is best - cost-wise along with if you want to see a LLMD instead of a LLND.

llmd = Lyme Literate Medical Doctor
llnd = Lyme Literate Naturopathic Doctor.

In some provinces ND's aren't licensed to prescribe antibiotics; in BC they are.
So, since we don't have any practicing LLMD's in Canada, if you want to treat with antibiotics, you have two choices:
1. Go to the U.S.
2. Go to a province that allows LLND's to prescribe antibiotics.

There is a retired LLMD in Hope, BC. - he was treating lyme patients, but was investigated and was at risk of losing his license...he finally retired. He currently educates ND's on how to diagnose and treat LD in Canada. He provides information to ND's so they can treat patients.
In fact, he will talk to patients on the phone. I have talked to him twice when I was trying to get my diagnosis.
