your adrenal glands are your "stress" glands. They produce hormones in response to stress. Cortisol, adrenaline, noradrenaline are produced...and there are more...
The female hormones that can cause hot flashes are estrogen, progesterone...and sometimes the male hormone testosterone plays into it as well. (Sometimes men get hot flashes)
This can start happening during the pre-menopause time of our lives...or once menopause is complete. It is caused by the fluctuation of the hormones...and the inbalance. The estrogen drops, and the progesterone drops even more.
HRT = Hormone Replacement Therapy - given to menopausal women to supposedly balance out their hormones to alleviate any symptoms associated with it. I was given it when I first had my symptoms...and the estrogel (estrogen) was bio-identical, but the progesterone wasn't - it was prometrium...and it did nothing to raise my progesterone levels...so my estrogen climbed...and I didn't feel any better. There's a lot more to it...but, most ND's know the value of progesterone...and using bio-identical only. In fact, some say all you really need is progesterone...but it's good to have your hormones tested to see if they're in range.
