Bartonella chances?

So today I was sitting on my couch resting my arm on the end of it, in my house we have an indoor cat, and today my dogs were chasing him, so what he did was jumped up on the arm of the couch where my arm was resting and he didn't know my arm was there so he started digging into my arm with his claws real hard and gave me two nasty scratches on the back of my arm, lots of blood and all from my arm. After I got the cuts I went to the bathroom and washed it off with water, peroxide, and soap.


My cat is an indoor cat and he has not been outside since 2011 although he does go into the basement to roam around so I'm not sure what he does down there. So what are the chances that he may have bartonella and could have passed it onto me(if I don't already have it from the tick that bit me months ago)?


I am kinda freaking out over this because I don't need another infection or a worse infection if I already have bartonella, They say it's highly unlikely in an older indoor cat since my cat is about 7 years old now. I don't know what to think, can anyone help me with this?

I think your good, especially because you took precautions and cleaned it immediately. Also if your already taking antibiotics and some bartonella did get into the blood stream it will probably be stopped before it becomes a problem.

I've had cats all my life...I wonder, too. But, in the end, I guess it doesn't matter whether it came from a tick or from my cats.
My one older cat limps sometimes...she's always been an indoor cat...but maybe she came into our home with it...she tends to bite us on occasion when she gets excited.
I also have had many cat scratches throughout my life...who knows?

If you have bart from a tick, and then you get a scratch from a cat...are you saying it will make your present bart infection worse?

That's the thing, he did get me good with the scratches but I went and cleaned them right away( after I yelled in pain with how much they hurt, ****). Anyway I'm not sure if it would make the infection worse and that's what I'm worried about, if I have Bart already I don't want it to get worse if my cat Does have it but I'm not so sure he does, I don't really examine him since he's indoors so I don't know if he has fleas, he never shows any symptoms or anything, it's just something I didn't need today that I am now worried about, it's always friggin something lol. Personally I believe it is a long shot that he does have it, but with my luck who knows. I really hope he doesn't since he is indoors, but ya never know.

Chances are if your cat had fleas (which is where cats get Bart from), you would notice his scratching madly. You cleaned the wound carefully and well, so I say don't worry about it. You have enough on your plate as it is, and you have taken appropriate actions in case kitty did have a very low grade infection.

Also, I have heard that bartonella is usually only an issue in kittens who's immune systems haven't matured enough to deal with bart infection. If your cat is older, healthy and doesn't have fleas, chances are that even if it has been exposed to bart it's titers will be very low.

I agree with Traveler - if you didn't have lyme, I would say there would be a 95% chance you wouldn't even be thinking about Bartonella - we are all so paranoid about sickness now. So don't worry, you are probably fine, enjoy New Year's Eve, and your cat =)) !!!
