Hot flashes....... Yikes!

I just turned 44. I've never had hot flashes before. However, when I started rifampin back in December, I experienced a series of nightly hot flashes for 2 weeks. Completely drenched in sweat. I had to strip off my clothes, towel off, and put fresh clothes back on. I even had a few occur during the day time.

Then, they vanished as quickly as they came on. They were gone! Well.... Last night they returned again! Yuck!

Why is this happening?

1. I am 44 and it's the beginning of menopause?
2. It's a side effect of rifampin?
3. It's a herx?
4. I might have babesia? (Although I did test negative)

I should add that I did try malarone for my first month on meds, along with mino. I didn't herx at all, and I didn't improve at all. But I was only on malarone for 1 month.

My other symptoms include: anxiety, severe weakness, insomnia, severe brain fog.

I'm on rifampin and I sweat too. Mostly at night and in the morning. I'm 25 and female. I have the exact same questions..

I'm 49, shh don't tell anyone! I've been experiencing the same issue, except I wake up first. Within 30 seconds I get a strange sensation in my core that radiates outward, then I start sweating. This happens several times a night. LLND said it was Babs. Too many symptoms overlap.

Re #3 ......New symptoms and/or a worsening of existing symptoms are herxes....

Re #4 There are many more strains of babesia than there are tests for them. Babesia is yet another clinical diagnosis that you just might find yourself getting from your LLMD when you share your symptoms history with her. It's also possible those hot flashes are related to your Lyme.

Your adrenals?

That's what my LLND thinks could be my problem. Way back before lyme diagnosis, my GP said I was having menopause symptoms because of the hotflashes. I tried the bioidentical hormones - and it didn't help.
A while later, I tried just the progesterone cream (theory is your progesterone drops a lot more than estrogen, and you become estrogen dominant) - gave it a good try...no improvement.

So, I am supporting my adrenals...still getting hot flashes - and sweating, but not enough to be considered Babesia - according to my LLND.

Mom of 2 - me too - wake up, strange sensation (add in a tad of anxiety), then I get hot and sweat.


I also get them occasionally during the day.

I have been on cortisol for my adrenals for 2 yrs now. I'm guessing it's not adrenal. But who knows.......maybe it is? It just started within days of beginning rifampin. It makes me suspicious that it's Lyme or herx related.
