OMG, I cant even tell you how aweful I feel. Honestly I haven't felt like this since before lyme!! I know they say when you have lyme you don't get the usual sicknesses that go around because of your weakened immune system. Well, I guess this is another clue that I have beat it because I have the typical post nasal drip, chest hurts because its all settling, body aches (not lyme joint pain, just the usual body aches), lowgrade fever.

First off, I am curious - Georgia hunter made a comment on another thread that he does not want to exercise because building up muscle creates acidity. All types of Bacteria like acidic environments. I have been exercising 5 times a week, and feeling awesome - but maybe it was too much OR maybe its because I was going outside after sweating from running on the treadmill to get the kids on the bus before drying off completely?

My main point - whenever I felt this ill, I used to give myself a few days and If I didn't get better I would just take a zpack or augmentin. I don't want to do that anymore. I was on abx enough last year. So what do I do?? I started detoxing since I figured you can detox when you are dealing with any type of bacteria - doesn't hurt right? im loading up on vitamin C - going to make sure I rest, but what else? This may be viral and I will have to just wait it out - but in the meantime, Any suggestions? thanks!

Sorry to hear you're sick, Chapelle!

Umm...exercise actually helps with immunity so, I wouldn't blame that. And, studies have shown that being wet/cold do not make a person more susceptible to illness.

My entire family takes 1 tsp. elderberry extract 4 times/day whenever they are sick. This reduces symptoms as well as the duration of the infection.

The best thing to do is to keep your immune system built up higher so your body naturally fights this stuff off, but of course, it will still happen at least occasionally for some as they have children in the house (as in your case) or other factors.

Elderberry and Echinacea are the two best for keeping the parts of the immune system up that fights colds and flu from what I know, which is admittedly, not enough.

And we can't just not exercise - the most knowledgeable LLMD's tell us we have to exercise to regain our health as soon as we can without it causing herxes.

Chapelle, I think exercise HELPS build the immune system. Generally for those with lyme light to moderate exercise is recommended, not something too intense like what body builders go through. Immediately after exercise there is a temporary immune suppression that last about 24 hours... However after that 24 hours the immune system rebounds and is stronger than it was before the exercise. But you are exercising 5 days per week which maybe the issue as it is too much and not giving much time for the rebound to occur. Maybe every 3-4 days might be better?

Sounds like you caught a flu virus? I know you have kids that goto school so I can guess it may have come from your kids?

Thanks all !! Elderberry it is!! cd - my husband said the same thing.

lymepickle - I was wondering about the exercise, but I am not overdoing it - very light weights and some running. maybe 35-45 min each day, and Ive been doing it for 3 weeks straight now and feeling great.

and yeah - my little one was sick for the past week - so if anything maybe I caught it from her.

my husband also said that since I am still having issues with yeast, that the yeast may be bringing down my immune system and making me more susceptible to illness - bc I very rarely get sick from my kids, with the stomach virus being an exception. I have no choice at this point but to be almost completely sugar and dairy free with my diet!! hate it though, LOL

Chapelle, so sorry you're feeling so bad at the moment. Hope it passes soon. Funnily enough, one of my new supplements is a rose hip, elderberry and (I think) blackcurrant syrup that is for immune strength. So hope the elderberry suggestion will help you too :-). Take care, sending hugs xx

So sorry you've come down with this Chapelle!

Sounds like a virus, no antibiotics necessary....elderberry would be good!
Someone else mentioned the kids - they probably brought something home to you.

Just take it easy, rest, be good to yourself!!!

woke up this morning with my chest hurting even more - I have bronchitis, ugh. I don't get it often, but always know when I do. My older daughter has a fever too - off to the Dr. we go. I have no choice here, will have to take abx - ugh.

While I'm sorry you're feeling worse and your daughter is sick, you don't necessarily need abx for bronchitis since most cases are viral in nature:

wow, I was toying with the idea of not taking them - but I've never done that before. Just kind of worrysome because I cant afford to take 2 weeks to recover from this - too much on my plate on a daily basis. But then again I was hoping not to take antibiotics for a long time since I was on them 1/2 the year last year! Interesting on the test - thanks SO much for all of the info

Its funny, but over the yrs, I have taken way more antibiotics than I should have, I guess because I always had them handy and wanted to knock the sicknesses out fast. But my thoughts have changed so much since I got lyme. I have a different view of all of it now.

Ya know what's ironic about taking abx for a viral infection? The healing time is usually the same if the person didn't take the abx which makes sense because he/she didn't need abx in the first place.

cd - I know that for sure! I just always worry that if it is indeed bacterial, and you don't take abx, you are just stalling the healing time.

Sorry to hear your sick! Maybe take a natural antibiotic to knock out an bacteria. Seems like it won't be as hard on the body.

Hi Chapelle, sometimes it's just "sick", like regular sick. I got my children flu shots every year and the last time, my daughter got a stomach bug, for a WEEK! She ended up yelling at me... I thought you told me we wouldn't get sick after the shot!

So, they never got flu shots again! They are healthy and do get sick, but I felt to bad, the flu shot was unrelated! I hope this is unrelated for you, but it SO STINKS when you are already sick all the time, to have something on top of it!

I had a bug last year, I couldn't get out of bed for 3 days. Every muscle hurt, I was exhausted thought I would die...., I guess probably like how lyme feels. Took me a week to get over, so weak and didn't want to eat much.

Unfair, but should pass. Will think of you and pray it's all better soon!

LMCM - thanks so much - but honestly I am not sick with lyme anymore, so that is a plus. Only dealing with the sickness I have at hand. Just frustrated because I was hoping to stay healthy between all of the exercising I have been doing, but I guess its bound to happen no matter what. Its 430am and I cant sleep bc my cough is keeping me up, Grrrrr.

I gave in to the Zpack - I took the herbs for two days and was getting worse, didn't want this to turn into pneumonia (bc my chest hurts SO bad) - so this will be interesting. It may actually prove a point afterall, that if I don't herx at all from the abx then I clearly have beat lyme!!

You are right, good test of lyme persistence! My daughter just had all this, the cough just wouldn't quit, she is in college and said everyone had it. Sometimes, no matter how often you wash your hands (or in my case, shop with your winter gloves on at all times!), you still get it! Wish germs had color or lit up or something so we could see them and avoid them!

We used UMCKA as soon as something starts coming on, but it doesn't always work and we need the abx anyway also. You should be a new lady by the end of the week :) hang in there!

Just to update everyone -

I was so sick I gave in to starting the zpack sat night. took the second dose sunday night.

woke up Monday morning even more sick. So I went back and asked them to test for the flu - yup, got type B influenza. just peachy! but what I am more mad about is that they didn't think to test for the flu when I first went in. Why oh why am I always self diagnosing???? I really need to find a good PCP - and one that "believes" in lyme so that they take my history of illness seriously!

so, I stopped the zithromax, did not take the prednisone that the Dr ordered (duh - why would I want my immune system to be even more compromised while fighting the flu??) He gave me the prednisone because I was having trouble breathing, which is why I originally thought I had bronchitis, but I think the swelling is just from all the coughing and from the flu in general. I feel better tonight for the first time after 4 days of fevers, body aches, and coughing fits.

Still taking my elderberry exract (thanks to you guys for the suggestion), vitamin c, was taking manuka honey but stopped (because I was wondering if that was attributing to the breathing issue, because I noticed it worsened when I took it, weird), was taking Tylenol but switched to aleve - because that's what my lyme doctor suggested. I decided to give her a call today. I wish she could be my PCP!!! she said I could come in and get an iv of vit c and such to help - but I barely had the energy to go down the block.

Anyway, the good side of all of this is - not a single lyme symptom has resurfaced and I didn't herx when I took the Zithromax, so I truly think I am good to go and safe to say I really am a lyme survivor =)

I had that bug for 2 or 3 weeks, but managed to keep the symptoms at bay with the things I was taking. I used a silver spray when it was starting to settle in my lungs. I've had a tendency to get bronchitis and the spray will nip it in the bud. It was a stubborn bug!! my college kid had it go on for 4 or 5 week, no time off from school to get the rest she needed. She graduates this spring, so the illnesses should slow down if her job doesn't bring too much stress. At least she won't be sleeping with a room full of girls.
