Just because your TSH is "normal" does not mean that you can't be hypothyroid. In fact, Lyme disease often interferes with how our cells absorb the thyroid hormone. Lyme bacteria can block thyroid hormone receptor sites.

My doctor explains how you can have normal labs, but still be low thyroid. (He doesn't discuss Lyme in the video......but he did discuss it with me at my last appointment).

He is the doctor who actually found my Lyme.

Very true, Utahgal!! Most doctors - even Endo's - won't diagnose an issue until it's severe and the body can't heal from Lyme if it's fighting trying to deal with other imbalances!

yeah LOL!! The last one I went to wanted to do surgery on my throat rather than give me the Armour thyroid pills I needed!! smhair

Even though free T3 and free T4 are the best thyroid tests we have, they only measure the "free" or "available" thyroid hormone floating around in the blood. They do not measure what your cells are using.

Extreme stress, illness ect., can hinder thyroid hormone from "fitting" in to cell receptors, making one hypo. The reverse T3 test (RT3) shows this, but most Endos choose to ignore this test. In this case Extreme stress on the body can cause the thyroid hormone to "mirror", or reverse its orientation to the receptors, regardless of how much hormone is available.

When this happens T3 only is used, forcing the backed up, reversed hormone into the receptors........... kind of like how one uses a toilet plunger. (lol)

FYI - My husband went to my LLND and I told him about his thyroid - being diagnosed, put on T4, and initially felt better, but it didn't last, and an increase did nothing.
So, he sent a sample of my husbands blood to the U.S. for a lab to check his FT3, FT4, and RT3

He said if the RT3 is in range then he will still tweak his meds - adding the natural (both t3 and t4 - from pig source). If the T3 , Rt3 ratio is wonky - i.e - RT3 too high, he will add some T3 along with the natural thyroid treatment.

He wants to do that before starting Lyme treatment. The majority - if not all his symptoms could be attributed to hypothyroid.
Then lyme treatment will follow - unless there are no symptoms after thyroid is addressed.

I will keep in mind that the adjustments need to be low and slow - 6 weeks between changes I think I read on another post.
