What dose of amoxicillin did you take? Did anyone take probenecid with it?

Was just reading the Horowitz book and he basically suggested taking 2-3 875MG Amoxicillin pills twice a day. That's 3500mg to 5250Mgs respectively! He then suggests taking probenecid (and plaquenil) with it to enhance it even more.

Currently I'm taking 2625Mgs and it's taken me a month to just build up to that! I weigh 130 pounds so I'm pretty light, I figured as a goal I would aim to just get to 3500mgs + Probenecid + Plaquenil, but even that sounds kind of scary given the herxing I've experienced so far.

It's worth mentioning that while I have herxed everytime I go up 1 pill or 1/2 a pill, the herxing subsides after a week or two so I can tolerate this.

Thoughts?

PS - Used to post here a lot. Haven't posted much lately...truth be told, despite these amoxicillin herxes, I've been doing MUCH better! I plan on being on Abx till august or september then stopping. This is sort of the final stint, and I want to finish the lyme and cos while they are down! If I take a low dose of amoxicillin or doxy alone, I feel 95%. I figured I may feel fine if I stopped abx, but last time I did that it came back 4 months later, so I want to hit it HARD now (adding tindamax later) so that doesn't happen.

I was given Augmentin which is amoxicillin and clavulanic to help absorption. The dose was 1000 mgs, 875 amox and 125 clavulanic. I had to take one pill every 12 hours. It was strong for me, but taking 2-3 twice a day does sound excessive. Unless you're in really bad shape to begin with, that sounds really aggressive. For that I would just ask for a PICC line.

Is this what your LLMD is suggesting or are you just going off the book?

1500 mg per day was my max. I was also prescribed the probenecid but did not use it. Do not underestimated the power of ammox in fighting this disease. It had a major effect on my overall improvement. Dr. always encouraged me to work up to suggested dose and dose down to what I could tolerate. Always said to take food with meds and probiotics also.

Two years with a four month break. Honestly I feel worse on the drugs...the thing is, when I went off them I crashed after a few months so I know I need to hit it hard. I usually level out with any abx after a week or two....except rifampin. That drug made me herx soooo bad for so long.

Do you think if I add probenecid to this dose I'm already taking I will herx badly?

LLMD suggested 875mg three times a day. But she's open to suggestions...I only need to take one more pill to be at the lower end of Dr. H's range, and that seems somewhat appropriate since I'm a light guy.

I think Augmentin is a little more intense due to the clavulanic. Then again, adding the probenecid would probably have A similar effect. I'm trying to hit lyme hard as hell before I come off abx, with hopes that I won't need to go on them again.

When I tried to go to 2000 mg I crashed. I could not put one foot in front of the other. It was too highly toxic for me. And I think staying on the high doses for prolonged periods can damage organs. They can only filter so much.

I feel pretty good on 2625 right now but everyone is different.

I have been on high doses for almost two years. Just recently developed a blood disorder which I believe was related to antibiotic use. Luckily I caught it and cut the medicine. I initiated vitamin k therapy which helps with clotting. I totally understand what you are dealing with. Certain side effects can be scary.

How did you know you had it? My family has a history of stroke...is there a test I need toget?

No I started bleeding and it wouldnt stop. I suspected it was one of the drugs and it did turn out to be a side effect. I knew some of the antibiotics caused anemia etc so I had been taking iron a few times a week. Anyway you can just have your dr give you blood tests and look at red blood cells, white cells etc. Also can give you an idea of how your liver kidneys etc are functioning while pumping high doses. Often times the values will be off.

Ah darn, sorry that happened to you. Well good news is my liver and kidneys are doing well.
