More and more I see MDs as I see car mechanics, waitresses, mail carriers… there are good ones and there are not very good ones. In some respects, we get what we get. When it comes to your health you'd be naive not to demand the best. Some people put more care and focus into their car than their medical care because, as a society, we've been cultured to accept, believe in and trust our doctors.
If your MD isn't up to speed but is willing to learn or accept outside info, you can help them grow. If not, run as fast as you can the other way. Then, I also like to follow up with them afterwards, confirming (w/ test results) what I tried to get them to understand. It's not to be confrontational as much as it is to encourage them to treat the next person with a little more professionalism.
Some of the bad MDs will never be reached.
