question on new symptom iv been getting which is confusing me

I was diagnosed with lyme and bartonella, bartonella not based on blood work but based on my symptoms my LLMD is certain I have it....Since iv been on a more aggressive treatment the past couple weeks and been doing detox baths for the first time I think im experiencing air hunger? I get these periods where its really hard to breathe, like labored breathing , not anxious or anything, and they dont last forever they last for a long time though and come and go, I notcie almost after every detox bath a couple hours later I experience this. I wasn't diagnosed with babsiea and I didnt test postive for it. I know that babsiea can cause air hunger so im confused here. Is it possible to have random ep of air huner or difficulty breathing from Lyme alone or from bartonella? I am worried that my LLMD possibly over looked babsiea even though I trust him since he was correct with everything else he said I have, So im trying to get more light on whats going on here???


EDIT: I wonder if this is a HERX? or from the lyme or bartonella, the reason why im confused is I had esymtptoms of lyme and bart for 2 years and never had this new air hunger which makes me think i dont have babsiea cuz it would of been there the whole time right? Has anyone heard of people getting air hunger from lyme, bartonella or herxing without having babsiea ?

I wish I could be more help but I don't have an answer for you. However, the same thing happened to me and I'm still trying to figure it out so you're not alone. I'm curious to see if anyone has an answer for this!

i dont get it becuz i had my lungs tested , their capacity is 100 percent and no signs of inflammtion, so im curious of its related to lyme or bart if you dont have babsiea....or a side effect of herxing this air hunger feeling?

It is entirely possible your LLMD missed Babesia. All he has to go by for your diagnoses are your sx, your reaction to tx and test results. I had minimal signs of Babs when I first started lyme tx, and my Babs tests were negative (but note that typical serology tests for Babs tests for only 2 strains: microti and duncani; while there are over 100 species out there.) So the test is going to miss most people.

Also, your body is dynamic and as you progress through treatment your body, symptoms, and responses change. So a less dominant infection may become more dominant over time. And sometimes you can have symptoms of a less dominant infection flare.

And yes, air hunger is very common w/ Babs. Air unger was one of my "loudest" symptoms at first but really the only Babs specific sx. As time went on, other more lyme and Bart specific sx became dominant but I always, and still have, intermittent air hunger.

hmmm im still wondering if you can get air hunger from lyme without have bab since i never had air hunger up til recently and all my other symptoms going on over 2 years it doesnt make sense to me .......

Air hunger is not a typical lyme or bart sx, which is why LLMDs diagnose babesia clinically when sx like air hunger show up w/out positive test results. It's also possible it isn't air hunger and maybe an upper respiratory infection. It's also very possible that your body and your infection levels are changing, as I mentioned.

If your sx were to stay static for 2 yrs, you would not be reacting to treatment or changes in your infection levels, or in other words you would not be progressing. So a new sx is very common and often signals a positive progression.

I find this very interesting as I have Bart and not Babs and sometimes also experience light air hunger.....to me it's more like when you go up a small flight of stairs after being sendentary and your body isn't quite up to working that hard yet. It usually only lasts a minute or so and is not so bad that it causes me to panic or feel stressed because of it. I only experience this during the day.

How does air hunger feel? I have symptoms that are similar to Jenny, but only came along 5 or six years ago (I think) but it may have snuck up on me. My symptoms have been coming and going and frequently changing for 35+ years. I do however, have drenching sweats that are more typical of Babesia.

Myeezy24, to illustrate Pirouette's point: I started taking Olive Leaf Extract on Pirouette's advice to force the lyme out of my cells and into my blood stream where they could be seen by the immune system. Four days later I had a fever blister. I have not had a fever blister in a long time. I would always get them when we went on vacation (stress) but even that had stopped. So I was quite shocked. The generally consensus is that the Olive Leaf Extract had stirred everything up allowing the herpes virus to assert itself for a little while.

With the lyme being widespread over the body, you would expect treatment to change your symptoms. Since Lyme digs itself into any cell, it takes time for treatment to force the Lyme out of the cells so it can be killed off. As the lyme is forced out, some symptoms will disappear. It's also unlikely that all of the bacteria in the bloodstream will be killed off at once. So some of the bacteria will escape back into the nearest handy cell. So as bacteria is driven out, symptoms would go away. As the bacteria tries to escape, it could burrow into a different organ. Symptoms go and are replaced by new symptoms.

Nice description!

For me, air hunger feels like I can't get a deep enough breath, like I have a weight in my chest sitting on my lungs preventing them from expanding… along with the "need" to take a deep breath but coming up without enough air. Also, I find myself gasping a little bit, like I forget to breathe (which is a function your brain and your heart "brain" is automating for you every second… so it's literally as if the system is "buffering" or there is a delay).

Others here have described air hunger in different ways…

No, air hunger is not associated with Lyme disease, only Babesia. As others have explained, it's actually fairly common to have symptoms of other things start to reveal themselves as treatment progresses.

The best analogy that I've read was about the layers of an onion:
As we peel back the layers of these infections, much like the layers of an onion, the symptoms of other conditions often present themselves. Partly due to the immune system 'waking' back up and starting to fight off things again as the bacterial load is lowered.

Don't panic, but do let your doc know the next time you talk to them or see them that you are experiencing air hunger and believe you may have Babesia as well.

im starting to think mine is anxiety related, i feel this only happens when i start working myself up with negative thoughts and may be hyperventilating.......not 100 percent sure but leaning more towards this i dont have any other barbs symptoms and this air hunger rlly only comes when im feeling depressed or anxious

I get it when my anxiety acts up. However, I also get it when it does not. I think my anxiety aggravates a lot of my symptoms. My pain also gets worse when I'm stressed.

I would pay attention to your symptoms to monitor for it and other Babs symptoms. Sometimes, a co-infection will come out more as you successfully treat other infections. Hang in there Myeezy. Things will get better!
