Hello, So I was diagnosed yesterday through an LLMD from ILADS. Was so wonderful to finally talk with someone who didn't think I was crazy and needed anti-depressants! I am super excited to start my treatment...however on the way out of the office the receptionist was talking to me about herxing and she said that some people have herxed so bad that they have died from it. That kind of took the wind out of my sails. Is it really that bad? Also I forgot to ask I was bitten last June, am I already in the late stages of the disease? Any input on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank-you!

She shouldn't have scared you like that.
For myself, I began a herx 48 hours after starting IV Rocephin. Hot, red, headache, flu like. This was 2 years after becoming ill. I was on it for only 3 weeks, most of the time I had a headache, from what I remember. I needed extra rest to heal.
It was not anything major. Not nearly as bad as having the flu. I, like you, was just relieved to finally know what was going on with my health and hopes for improvement.

montanagrl81 - In extreme cases, yes herxing can kill....BUT ...it is not common...and if you employ several detox methods to flush out the toxins, so they don't build up, that will help lessen the severity of the herxes. Also, when you're starting treatment, it's a good idea to start low and slow and see how your body reacts.

Don't worry, we're going to help you with this.

Have you started detoxing? - Lots of water, with lemon, epsom salt baths, dry brushing,.....

Congratulations, Montanagrl!!!

As Girlie said, in extreme cases herxing can be life threatening, but you have tools to help you keep from being one of those extreme cases!!! Please read through our "New to Lyme?" thread for some really good ideas for detoxing to keep those toxins from getting to such a high level in your body. Also starting off on low doses of your abx and raising them slowly will also help you stay ahead of the toxin load so your body doesn't get overwhelmed.

And yes, it's likely that you are in the chronic stage of Lyme after a year of no treatments, but that surely doesn't mean that you won't heal or that you won't heal well. I've healed from a 40 yr old Lyme, Bartonella, Babesia, RMSF infection.
