Has anyone had HORRIFIC neck and shoulder pain while taking Doxycycline? I just started it three days ago. I also have a horrible headache and have had to keep my house almost pitch black and silent. My light and sound sensitivity is on another level. What could this mean? My primary put me on Doxycycline while I find an LLMD. Thanks.

I think you're herxing.

Taylor - doxy was my first antibiotic and I was given a presc of 200 mg twice daily. I had been given advice from people on here to start low.
So the first day - I did 100 mg that evening.
Then the next morning I did 200 mg and continued with that dose - twice daily.
Day 4 I had bad back pain - mid and upper back. (not my usual nerve pain on my upper left side - this was different). It lasted for 12 days - and then on the advice of Traveler here on the forum, I went down to half dose - she was pretty sure I was herxing. Within a few days, my back pain lessened. It was there, but not nearly as bad. I upped my detoxing, and when I went back on the full dose, my herxing wasn't as severe.

Herxing on Day 4 of taking a new antibiotic has happened to me several times since then.

So, I don't know what dose you are on...but if it is unmanageable - even with upping your detox, then maybe lower your dose for a few days....until it's at a tolerable level...and then go back up slowly.

Hi Taylor, Sorry you are not feeling well. It sounds like a herx to me also, which is good, you are killing the bugs. But also, this can overload your body if it gets too intense. You may want to back off a little.

Please be sure to read the new to lyme thread and see all of the detoxing recommendations. Keep moving, even if it is a short walk. Drink lots of water and just really baby yourself.

Good luck, sounds like you are on the right track.

It sounds like a Herx to me too. I have been battling horrible neck and head pain. Doxy has caused this kind kind of herx for me.

You have to detox, detox, detox. Some of my methods include:

Lemon water;
Burbur and Pinella;
Alka Seltzer Gold;
Binders, such as Activated Charcoal (take at least 2 hours before or after meds)
Detox teas, such as Yogi

I hope you feel better soon! Also, make sure to take doxy during a meal to avoid extra upset to your stomach and try not to lay down for at least 30 minutes after to avoid extra nausea.
