GMO industry set to flood U.S. food supply with endless torrent of toxic chemicals

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's recent approval of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) resistant to new herbicides will soon unleash a flood of new toxic chemicals across the nation's agricultural heartland, observers have warned.

Previously, nearly all GMO crops approved for planting were engineered for resistance to a single herbicide: Monsanto's blockbuster product Roundup (glyphosate). The widespread adoption of these crops led to an explosion in Roundup use, which in turn spurred the evolution of Roundup resistance in agricultural weeds.

In response to the proliferation of Roundup-resistant "superweeds," GMO companies have turned to engineering multi-herbicide resistance into their crops. Specifically, GMO crops are now available resistant to both Roundup and the Dow herbicide 2,4-D, or Roundup and another herbicide, Dicamba.

But as critics of biotechnology have repeatedly noted, the adoption of these new GMOs will merely exacerbate the problem - encouraging still more herbicide use and the evolution of ever-tougher superweeds. In a recent article, Dr. Jonathan Latham of the Bioscience Resource Project referred to the process as "a vicious cycle that threatens both our environment and our food supply."

The lack of oversight and honest science on gmo's is frightening. We are basically relying on what Monsanto and its paid shill scientists say in regards to their gmo creations and pesticide sprays. The FDA fast tracked all this technology b/c the FDA is chock full of Monsanto people. The organizations are synonymous.

The whole thing is rather kafkaesque in logic, we are creating new seeds which can withstand more chemicals! so they are going to be drenching our food supply with even more chemicals and that is good for us how?

Glyphosate is likely a carcinogen. Not to mention what it does to the environment and the whole ecosystem. Sure, we're eventually finding this out now, only 30 years later, years after Monsanto had assured us how great and safe this stuff was. Not to even mention the possible issues with gmo's and what they directly do when they are within our bodies. There are certainly lots of questions on that but no worries thank goodness Monsanto assures us it's all good.

Well, maybe this stuff isn't good for us, but at least it's good for Monsanto. They make money on both ends, the seeds/IP and the pesticides. It's a brilliant but utterly cynical and disgusting strategy that is a classic example of corporations doing everything it takes to make $ at the cost of public and environmental health.

The power of these people is staggering. We can't even get products labeled as GMO. If gmo was the greatest thing ever like they claim why are they so afraid of labeling the foodstuffs it's in? hmmm.

Not to even mention the mafia style playbook monsanto employs with farmers, scientists, research that stands contrary to its goals.

I hate this company. Obviously.

That screed being over, I must say that I find gmo technology very interesting and promising, but in the hands of a corporation like Monsanto it becomes a very very dangerous tool. We need the right, honest, entities in charge of this stuff that can offer proper stewardship over these technologies.

It's truly frightening. Glyphosate is everywhere now. Even those of us who don't eat the specific gmo foods have this stuff in our systems. And monsanto is building up a slew of new gmo crops that stretches far beyond its current roster of foods. It's a tragedy the gmo labeling law didn't pass even though 90% of people want labeling.

We have the privilege of being guinea pigs for Monsanto's giant experiment. There is no opt out.
