Hello everyone,

the past couple weeks, for a few days every week, I feel like there is a lump in my throat. When i tilt my head downwards, the area by my thyroid feels HUGE! however, looking at my neck, i can't visibly see a swelling there.

I DO have hypothyroid and was diagnosed with that years before i got lyme. I only take the smallest amount of synthroid though because i was BARELY hypothyroid.

I have also been having pain in my neck. I'm not sure if this could be thyroid problems or lyme? my lyme has gotten REALLY bad really fast and i just started taking antibiotics again yesterday for it.

I know you guys are going to say go to a doctor which i do plan on doing, i just wanted to see if anyone else ever had these problems with lyme?

I'm so sorry that your issues with Lyme have ramped up again!!

I'm hypothyroid and I too will tell you that you need to see a doctor, but you need to make sure that they actually know what they are talking about!! I had one ENT refuse to do any testing and wanted me to go in for surgery on my throat!! He refused to consider that I had thyroid issues at all. Scary.

That site will also help you learn why Synthroid may not be the best thing you can be on for this as well. I was on Synthroid for Hashimoto's & being hypothyroid and it did very little for me. So when I really started having issues, I found a doctor - through STTM and I now am being treated for hypothyroidism with natural thyroid meds that help provide a more balanced hormonal approach - Armour thyroid.

Lyme is known to cause thyroid issues, so I'm glad you aren't putting this off!! Many of us here are needing to take thyroid meds, so ask any questions you may have!!

As Traveler mentioned, thyroid issues are not uncommon here.

My "Hashimoto" thyroid can be very challenging. I need levels checked four times per year. When I'm hypo my throat can get that lump feeling (hard to swallow) and it will even feel like I have strep throat starting, plus it will also just ache. With me, this improves a couple weeks after thyroid med adjustments. So, yes it might be your thyroid.

Synthroid didnt help my thyroid symptoms either, the natural stuff with T4 and T3 helps me the most. I use the newer Acella NP Thyroid, very similar to Armour brand.

I, too, have thyroid disease and I had it long before Lyme.

I'd been doing very well on synthetic T4 (levothyroxine - generic for Synthroid) and synthetic T3 (liothyronine - generic for Cytomel).

Ever since Lyme hit, I've needed some type of thyroid hormone dose increase just about every month.

Infections mess with thyroid function so my experience isn't uncommon.

Without a doubt, please see your doctor and ask for thyroid labs. I hope your doctor not only checks pituitary hormone TSH but the preferred testing of the actual thyroid hormone levels: FreeT4 and FreeT3.

Most people need both of those levels to be well above mid-range to be free from thyroid symptoms.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I am going to call around to find a new doctor today. It sucks because since I moved across the country, I have to start all over with doctors.

If you are having to start over, why not check that list of "Good Doctors" that you can get from STTM? That's where I found my doc and I am very happy with her.
