Started Doxy plus herbs - birth control pill not working??

I was diagnosed with Chronic Lyme Oct.7th after 3 years of hell and lots $$$ and misdiagnosis. I started Doxycycline 3 weeks ago. I'm also taking biocidin drops to deal with the gut film and Cholestyramine to mop of toxins, plus a variety of methylation vitamins, extra magnesium etc. I was doing great, feeling tons better, except still tingling and burning feet. Now, 3 weeks in, lots of the symptoms have returned and I'm also having a lot of breakthrough bleeding. My OB put me on the low dow bc pill 3 months ago because my hormones were all over the map (in peri-menopause and bio-identical caused more problems) and it has been wonderful. This was obviously before the Lyme diagnosis... It would seem to me that somehow, the estrogen is being blocked...I'm having lots of nausea and hot flashes, which I was having off and on but not as bad as now. Or it is just herxing...I was curious if anyone else had this problem? Thanks!!!

I am way done with menopause (64). Pre-lyme there are times I can drink a cup of coffee in the afternoon and hot flash. A glass of wine always made me flash. My Mom says those parts of meno sometimes just don't go away. Oh joy.

I have noticed that NOW with lyme I have night sweats again and I do get hot flashes again without coffee or alcohol. So who is to say?

Nausea I got was generally nothing to do with menopause but when I was on prescription antibiotics boy did I get nauseous.

Honestly everything I experience now I chalk it up to lyme. I so dislike this carp of a disease. Such a scum sucking bottom feeder!

If I had your problem I would take natural progesterone. Read about Dr. John R. Lee and see if his ideas make sense to you.

Since Doxy is an antibiotic it is making your birth control less effective. If you are sexually active make sure you use another form of protection!

Like PeteZa said, you might want to look into a natural progesterone, and I think that you should let your doctors know that you are currently on Doxy and birth control at this current time.

Like LB said, antibiotics often make birth control less effective. Did you not tell your LLMD you were taking it?

Makes sense now. Ya, I put it on the list when I filled out all the forms. I will call them and see what they say. Thanks for the responses.

It's full of good information - symptom lists, info on probiotics, detoxing suggestions and more.

Did you have your hormone levels tested... or just going by symptoms?

If they haven't been tested, I suggest doing that - to see the levels.

Thanks for the welcome. I starting read it and it's very informative but it's very long so it will take some time to get through it. Also, yes, lots of hormone tests. I'm in peri-menopause, so they were all over the map before I got on the pill. I've had every test under the sun, including hormones, brain scans, MRIs, etc, endocrinologists, neurologists, rheumatologist, ENT, Orthopedic, cardiologist...Before the Lyme doc, I received the following diagnoses: anxiety, border-line fibromyagia, anxiety, POTS, anxiety, peri-menopause...did I mention anxiety disorder?

cr3ativegirl I so feel your pain.

I had no uterus when I started menopause and they thought I was crazy. Actually so did I. And poor husband did not know who was coming home from work Jekyll or Hyde.

My Mom and my Grandma (NaNa) both did estrogen and they were not the healthiest people I knew and in fact I took my lesson from my Great Grandma. Yep, she and I were alive at the same time. She didn't take anything but boy did she says sometimes were rough. I am so glad I watched her. I learned more from her than anyone. Now she did sit in the big picture window with the magnifying glass and a pair of tweezers and pluck those hairs off her chin. But God love her - she didn't have to have drugs to go through menopause. I knew I came from good stock and so I tried it her way. I admit I had to have a little help with the progesterone, but only for a couple of months.

Honestly my attitude did it. I never once thought I was getting old. I knew I was going into my "sage" phase of my life.

Lyme and menopause at the same time? Oh honey, I will put you in my thoughts and prayers. Email me any time and know I care!!!

Yes, antibiotics surely decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills...surprised the pharmacist did not warn you of that!! sorry you are going thru all of this!

For two years, I've blamed it all on menopause! My (previously undiagnosed) Lyme symptoms flared horribly around my cycle. The pill has helped trendously. I had never been on it before. I would love not to be on hormones, but I don't think I could live through that pain again. Maybe when I'm healed...
