So I've been infected for almost a year and a half and have been treated for about
a year. I've never had swollen lymph nodes until I had a big herx yesterday. My armpits and back of my knees are swollen. My question is, why all of a sudden are they swelling up it's not like I haven't been actively treating the bugs for a year and taking abx and herbs and such the whole time.
Is my system losing efficiency to detox? Are the new supplements and such I'm taking actually causing the opposite effect of not detoxing as well? about
2 weeks ago I started COQ10, L-Arginine, TUDCA and NAC. I've been taking fish oil, laktoferrin and garlic pills for almost the whole time.
I would imagine one would say well its the bug die off but they've been dying off for a while through treatment and such and never had this issue.
Appreciate any theories thanks!

Rikky - did you recently change your treatment protocol? Can you remind me what you're currently taking, and for how long?
It could be a herx.
herxes can change over time...especially when we are changing protocols and targeting different infections.

Yes 2 weeks ago I switched to Rifampin and Cipro. Its most likely that I killed off too many bugs and overloaded my lymphatic system. I was just looking for other potential reasons but that's likely the cause.
I talked to my LLMD today he wants me to stop the Rifampin and just continue with the Cipro for now. He doesn't believe I'm having side effects to the abx and it's bug toxin die off. I asked him why not stop Cipro instead and he said Cipro is a simpler less complicated antibiotic so stay with that to minimize the variables. He wants to continue down the Bartonella treatment track. He said he might mix up my regimen when I see him in a few weeks since I had some response to what I'm currently on.

Yes, it does sound like you are dealing with a herx, Rikky. Your LLMD offered a sensible plan.
I was happy to read that you've started L-arginine.....that will help with Babesia and Bartonella. I really like the idea of making the body inhospitable to the bugs and l-arginine does just that.
I must share the caution that others shared with me: L-arginine can reactivate viruses. Buhner only mentions Herpes and Shingles but, members here have had their EBV reactivate.
NAC is one of my favorite supplements - you may know that it inhibits biofilm formation. I like it for how clear it keeps my lungs/sinuses.
CoQ10 is another good one....I've been taking that for years and upped my dose when I got diagnosed with Lyme. Are you taking ubiquinol form?
Please tell me about
TUDCA....

Oh yes, we discussed the cipro/rif combo in another thread - my mind went blank there.
I am glad that you are just on one of those antibiotics - be sure to let us know what changes your Dr. makes to your protocol.

I cut and pasted a good descript
ion of TUDCA below but its basically a liver detox but more. My LLMD likes the one from Gun Show Supplements that you can find on Amazon.
"Tauroursodeoxycholic acid, more commonly referred to as TUDCA, is a bile salt that is found naturally occurring in the body. When regular bile salts reach the intestines, they can be metabolized by bacteria into UDCA and then later bound to a Taurine molecule to become TUDCA.
TUDCA is a water-soluble bile salt, which is in contrast to regular bile salts possessing both water soluble and fat soluble ends and conferring a detergent effect. This is good for the bile salt's biological purpose (emulsifying fats in the intestines to help with absorption) but when bile acids back up in the liver, a clinical state called cholestasis which occurs when the liver is unhealthy, these bile salts can be damaging to cells by destroying the membranes and signalling for cell death. TUDCA and other water soluble bile salts like UDCA compete with this toxicity and thus indirectly protect cells from death.
Additionally, it seems that TUDCA is able to reduce stress to any cell's Endoplasmic Reticulum; an organelle in cells that serves as a highway from the nucleus out into the cytoplasm, and aids in folding proteins. Through reducing ER stress, TUDCA has been implicated in a wide range of beneficial metabolic effects such as reducing insulin resistance and diabetes, and being a neurological protection agent. However, usages of TUDCA beyond the liver are preliminary whereas usage of TUDCA for helping an already harmed liver is quite reliable as TUDCA is used in clinical settings (hospitals) for treating cholestasis."

Thanks for the info on TUDKA!
I never heard of the stuff before (which doesn't mean a thing lol). Your LLMD seems to know his supplements - I'm impressed!
What were you taking for liver detox before this?

Before TUDCA I was taking nothing ;o) I was on Mepron for a long time so couldn't take the milk thistle. All my blood work was fine as well but I pressed my LLMD that I wanted to start taking liver and other support supplements.
