Hi Mishka!
Welcome to our community! I"m so glad you found us!
If you haven't yet, it would be helpful for you to start with reading through the thread at the top of the forum titled,"New to Lyme?...Start here!!", as it is packed full of important information, symptom lists, helpful links and pdf's, how to detox when one has these infections, information on probiotics and much more.
Many Lyme patients take 2 or 3 abx (antibiotics) at the same time. I know it seems like a lot, but these are not common bacteria. They are actually one of the most complex bacteria that we know of, so a short course of just one bacteria won't work.
I agree that those abx aren't used for Babesia, but one of the other tick-borne infections. Most likely your doc is starting you off treating for Lyme, as the test results aren't very reliable for these infections. There are many false negatives due to Lyme's affect on the immune system and the tests relying on the immune function.
Unfortunately, I don't know much about
abx treatment (I healed with herbs only), but according to this article (
www.ilads.org/lyme/B_guidelines_12_17_08.pdf, which is the ILADS treatment guidelines, Flagyl is given at 500 to 1500 mg daily in divided doses, and the Doxy I know needs to be above 200 mgs - so your doc is doing as they should with the abx.
Do be sure that you use NO alcohol with the Flagyl though - A severe, "Antabuse" reaction will occur, consisting of severe nausea, flushing, headache, and other symptoms.
You do want to start off slow, and on low doses though. This will decrease the risk of any large herxes happening.
Also do be sure that you are detoxing well. This will also reduce your risk of large herxes, but it does take quite a bit of detoxing to help. We have some great suggestions in the "New to Lyme?" thread at the top of the forum, and this is another really great resource:
