Interesting thought here, is back before they knew for sure if plastic water bottles leached chemicals, there were stories of where testing labs had to throw away all of their plastic test tubes because they were messing with their results due to the tubes leaching chemicals into their medium.
Also, if you look at drinking water sold in a plastic bottle, it'll have an expiration date on it. "Drinking" water normally has anti-microbial chemicals in it meaning it shouldn't expire, or if it does, it shouldn't be a mater of months. The expiration date on these bottles is actually the expiration date of the plastic they are stored in.
Also, if you ever stick your head inside a rubber or plastic mask, you'll notice that rubber smell. That's actually the mask giving off petroleum gasses.
