Hey, what do you guys think about back pain as a herx?

Looking for opinions or experience.

I have a history of a lower back disk issue. The pain of it is well known to me.

So, when I started the artemisinin the pain all.of.a.sudden. in my lower back was part of the reason that I went to the ER for the first time in my lyme career.

I took a week off the art. but the LBP persisted. I restarted the art last week Sunday and my LBP is still hanging on. It does NOT feel like my usual pain but my Chiro says it's the disk.

Do you guys think herxing can cause this pain or can it cause a disk to pop? I've heard the germs like to hang out in injured tissue and that makes me wonder if the art. is killing the bugs in my lower back? Or is this a crazy theory? It's just such a different sensation for me and it isn't resolving like it does every other time. Thanks for any thoughts or input.

Yes, it is possible this is a herx, but it may not be either. One way to possibly tell if it is a herx or not is to try adding or increasing your detox protocol. Sometimes, the toxins from die-off are "stuck" in place and need some encouragement to leave the body...

My first herx ever was on Day 4 of doxycycline - and it was back pain..not lower though, but thoracic.

It went on for 12 days until I posted on the forum.. and I think it was Traveler who said to detox more and back off on the antibiotics .
I did and the pain lessened greatly.

I'm hoping yours is a herx, too.

I also have lower back pain. It did not feel like my "normal" back pain though and after talking to my llmd as I also have gotten lumps in my back, we have decided as a working theory for now that it is indeed from the Lyme and as a die off reaction the lymph nodes in the back were swelling. He also thinks it is likely that my back issues including my degenerative disc disease is due to the Lyme's as well. As I am 33 hears old and the disc issues started after my assumed infection date of 2009. He put it this way 33 years old and degenerative disease with out a reason? Not likely. I tend to agree it is the Lyme's that caused it therefore when bacteria stated dying it was going to affect my back and did it ever.

OMGoodness, TBear - I just started getting back spasms two days ago! I would sit down and BAMO! Then it happened again while I was taking a shower - WTHeck?! Everyday, without fail, is something new.

Yes, this is an odd thing. Really starting to give credence to the theory that the bugs colonize damaged tissue. That would help explain how different people have different issues but the presentations of the specific areas seem very similar.

Hello, I am new to this forum. I was googling Herx and back pain and found it. To give some background, i have a history of celiac, Hashimoto’s, hyperparathyroidism, EBV and Lyme. I take care of most of my issues with diet, supplements, levothyroxine and surgery (of the Parathyroid). However, about 2x/week I suffer from fairly acute lower back pain that I quell with L-lysine. I have always thought it was lingering virus having a party in my nervous system and using the lower back as the epicenter. Basically, there is acute stiffness in my lower back, making my normally limber body unable to straighten appropriately. I then take up to 6000 mg of L-lysine. This usually does the trick and the pain and stiffness go away. However, once a month I have been having a one-hour oxygen treatment (inhaled). Within two days, I am flat on my back, unable to move. My back becomes so stiff! I do my little L-lysine, NAC, monolaurin, rhodiola, probiotic protocol and pray I work through it quickly. I have now had about eight treatments spaced about 3 weeks apart. Any suggestions on more natural remedies and a guess of when/if this will end? Many thanks.

Back pain is one of my biggest toxicity responses and Herx symptoms. I agree about it seeming like things are trapped in that area.

When I was living in a high mold environment, my back was so bad I couldn't sit down. I would have to awkwardly lounge to the side to eat or sit anywhere.

Glutathione and activated charcoal have helped a lot over time. I also will spend a long time massage my lower back with organic olive oil and peppermint oil. When it's particularly flared up, it feels like there are painful lumps. The peppermint oil especially helps ease the symptoms.
Recently, I've completed 5 rounds of acupuncture and am amazed how much my pain has reduced (as I have been actively detoxing). For me, it's definitely like something has been stuck there.

No, but I have in the past and I was disappointed. I have a provider who is willing to do all necessary bloodwork. I have an arsenal if supplements and historically have used an acupuncturist and herbalist from china with 55 years of experience. I get put iff by providers selling their pricey concoctions and thus far have not been impressed.

That’s too bad that the Lyme docs you’ve seen have only wanted to sell their concoctions.
I did have one NP dr trying that - but I dumped her right away.
