Paul G Auwaerter anywhere near my lyme treatment? No thanks! :P But really that is good news that a prestigious medical center is putting lyme on the map and hopefully going to generate some research dollars for it.

Auwaerter is beyond terrible. Did you see his paper that calls patients with chronic lyme anti-science? basically denies persistent borreliosis exists and makes fun of chronic lyme patients. There was a very recent paper that came out of Hopkins looking at treatments to help treat borrelia persisters, and lo and behold he was a co-author on this paper. Bit of cognitive dissonance there.

This is in my back yard and was all exicted when I first heard the news.

But they are only "researching and studying" There is no treatment available.

Yep, this is not likely a good thing, unfortunately. As Psilociraptor suggests, Paul Autwaeter had been the biggest Chronic Lyme denier ever since I entered the "Lyme world" back in 2000. He's NOT trustworthy to conduct anything to do with Lyme - he's been the spokesperson for IDSA, and has aggressively denied chronic Lyme many times over.

I'm morbidly curious though, as to what they are going to do. We know that the CDC has started a group called Lyme Corps that calls local doctors and hospitals to make sure that they are following the outdates (and never been useful) IDSA guidelines and now this? Seems they are really running scared of 'losing face' with the public as their fallacies are dismantled by those that are tired of all this nonsense.

An opportunity for these people to change their mind on Chronic Lyme?

Let's face it....MOST people now agree....Lyme can be a severe Chronic condition.

Too many faces on these illnesses to just ignore,so many blood tests have proven the Chronic condition it can be.

What do they do...wait until one million people are sick and then research & develop around that,some "may"look very foolish a few years down the road..imo

Yeah, the funny thing was I didn't even know he had a reputation for being so awful. I was just starting my research into lyme so I had very little bias. I stumbled across one of his papers and couldn't make it past the abstract because it read with such religious intensity rolleyes "Attacking the culture of science" - should science have a culture? And I recall him somewhere comparing chronic lyme advocates to anti-vaxers and HIV deniers. His presence on that paper with the persister cells is odd for sure. I can't tell what the guys angle is.

I think he is hedging his bets to give himself an out. Yes, the irony is he is calling chronic lyme patients religious zealots who are hijacking science, when in fact he is describing his own mo. He preaches a dogma that states that there is no way persistence is occurring and harming patients. The problematic aspect of this wholesale and categorical denial is such a position cannot be proven by science and our current diagnostic methods. His categorical denial/position comes down to a view that is built upon faith.

And the converse has been shown, we have seen persistence in animal models (Hodzic mouse models and Straubinger's dog models, while we have also seen positive cultures and/or positive pcr of synovial or csf in patients with continuing symptoms after antibiotic therapies, sometimes months to years after treatments).

There is certainly much more to be learned, sadly the IDSA lyme cabal controls a lot of the public funding (what little there is), they have done nothing to push the research on borrelia/coinfections forward. Imo we need large longitudinal studies following lyme patients and long term outcomes. We also need larger scale pathology studies examining lyme patients who had continuing symptoms even after antibiotic therapies. If we are able to culture viable spirochetes from specific tissues that borrelia gravitates towards, like the brain, it will go a long ways in answering some important questions.

I heard that Judith Miklossy will be releasing a position paper with the Harvard team (Moir and Tanzi) that are looking into an infectious etiology for Alzheimer's. I'm guessing since Miklossy is involved they may be looking to do research looking at spirochetal infections which would be fantastic.

The other problem is that the 'powers that be' aren't approving any other tests! There is better testing available, but it's not being funded, so groups are having to do fund raising on their own just to get the testing to the stages of clinical trials. Then, even if it is a good test, it's not considered to be an 'approved' test, or not done in an 'approved' lab, even if they are fully licensed and have whatever else is needed.

And we need to define "long term outcomes". Previously, they have only followed chronic Lyme patients treatments for a few weeks - and we all know that no Chronic Lyme infection is treated successfully in just a few weeks.

We do have a few articles showing culture viable spirochetes from specific tissues, not only from the brain (Dr. A. MacDonald and a few others), but other tissues as well:

Really? What about the 3 sudden cardiac deaths (in their 20's & 30's, 2013). What about the many, many dying from Alzheimer's, the slow death being endured by so many, the list goes on & on.

I lost a lot of sleep over those clinical trials when i first started reading in to this. Then I realized that the most intensive trial was 90 days with a rotation of ceftriaxone and doxycycline. Which comes nowhere close to addressing ILADS recommendations of multiple drug regimens based on patient specific diagnostics and symptoms which generally extend from 6 months to several years. Truly embarrassing for those claiming to have more "rigorous science". You can provide the cleanest data you want but it tells you nothing when it doesn't address the typical clinical practices they are trying to refute.

As for proof, agreed. I was on lymeneteurope before here where there was a discussion regarding proof of the relevance of persisters. I linked McDonalds paper showing intracellular and extracellular persisters in the brains of 3 deceased neuroborreliosis sufferers. The response I got was "Well why do you think no one is jumping up and down at that? Their presence doesn't prove their relevance", as if microorganisms evolved persistence mechanisms just to fool with scientists rolleyes The burden of proof they're requiring to move forward is so high it's unrealistic. The majority of science is not even built on proof, just models based on data/observation.

Which reminds me, I finally watched Under Our Skin last night. Some of those guys claiming there's no proof of bacterial persistence and that it's "the aches and pains of daily life" or its "of psychological origin". Where's the proof of that? Where is this double standard coming from?

They are spending good time and money to understand why some patients develop post-treatment Lyme disease??!!

We already know the answer to that. They didn't treat it fast enough! Why don't they spend that money finding a cure.

They should let someone who HAS or HAS HAD lyme run this facility. Someone who actually cares about healing lyme might put this facility to good use. It's clear from the article that they just want to buy new cubicles and theorize all day. They're planning to treat lyme research just like cancer research. We haven't found a cure yet, but we're "trying". Thanks, but no thanks.

The presentation of Lyme disease in clinical practice is variable.

"Thirty-nine percent of patients ultimately considered to have Lyme disease do not meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) criteria;

approximately 40 percent had negative Lyme disease serology and an acute viral-like illness without objective findings;

It is infrequent that spirochetes are seen in human blood samples by simple microscope views. There's just too little blood in the samples out of a lot of blood circulating in the body. They don't hang out in the blood stream too often. That's why the antibody or serology tests were developed (except they are unreliable for several reasons".

I hate to say it, but it will probably take a couple violent events before the media/society is forced to start taking Lyme disease seriously. When some crazy lyme terrorist starts shooting people in the name of lyme psychosis, then society might finally change its tune. It's unfortunate that our society only listens when things get to the extreme, but it seems to be the case.

It is quite unbelievable the response from the media and society. What an enormous effort to try to suppress a disease. It's really quite strange.

Actually, it starts out in the skin, then moves to the blood, then moves to the tissues and more. The more time that passes between the time of the infection to the time of treatment, the further they will go, eventually reaching the brain and bones. This is a survival technique of this bacteria, and why they have a corkscrew shape when in the spirochetal stage. It allows them to "bore through" anything in the body - given enough time. The amount of time it takes for these bacteria to do this though depends on many things, including previous health conditions and the strength of the immune system.
